SUMMARY:Artemis II kisses the Moon! - Space Renaissance with Artemis II on lunar farside!
DESCRIPTION:Panelists: Prof. Bernard Foing (SRI president\, CEO LUNEX EuroMoonMars ILEWG COSPAR9)\, Adriano V. Autino (SRI Founder\, CEO\, and VP)\, and Sabine Heinz (SRI webinar moderator)\, together with SRI Board members and space experts. \nArtemis II was launched on 1 April 2026 aboard the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket with 4 astronauts in the Orion capsule targeted by the ESA service module towards the Moon and safely back. It builds on the partial success of the uncrewed Artemis I in 2022 and is demonstrating a broad range of capabilities needed on deep space missions. On 6 April\, the Orion capsule will be closest to the Moon (at around 7400 km). \nSRI will celebrate this special moment for humanity. We’ll have SRI Board Members and experts giving information and comments about Artemis and future lunar exploration and\, hopefully\, settlement programs. \nAstronauts will see part of the Moon’s far side and poles not seen by humans before (even though we had global views of the Moon from robotic probes since SMART-1 \, Chang’E 1-2\, Chandrayaan 1-2\, LRO\, and other missions). \nSpace Renaissance International (SRI) actively supports the NASA-led Artemis program\, advocating for it as a critical step toward human civilization becoming multi-planetary. As a UN COPUOS observer\, SRI emphasizes international cooperation and has proposed that Artemis and ILRS coalitions plant a UN flag on the Moon to symbolize peace and shared heritage. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/Knx9Kghkarc \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/973055088618818/

SUMMARY:SRIC4 #11: "Space Romanticism - by Dr. Marie-Luise Heuser"
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #11 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\nBy Dr. Marie-Luise Heuser – January 17\, 2025 – © Copyright\, Dr. Marie-Luise Heuser\, 2026\, All Rights Reserved – m.l.heuser@gmx.net\nRomanticism envisioned the human being as oriented beyond the Earth—toward the infinite expanse of the cosmos. From the late eighteenth century onward\, this longing for the heavens emerged not only in poetry\, painting\, and music\, but also in philosophy and science\, which increasingly imagined the universe as boundless and dynamic. Central to Romantic thought was a redefinition of space: no longer merely a mechanistically conceived container space for things and their movements\, but a dynamic ontological entity that holds the universe together and enables the emergence of existence. For Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph Schelling\, space was an “existing possibility” and a realm of freedom\, echoing the Romantic conviction that human beings belong not to a single place\, but to the whole. Space Romanticism brings together works by Caspar David Friedrich\, Novalis\, and other European artists to explore how Romantic art reflects and shapes this expanded vision of space. \nA short bio\nMarie-Luise Heuser studied philosophy\, history\, physics and mathematics at Heinrich-Heine-University in Düsseldorf. She received her doctorate with a dissertation on Schelling’s philosophy of nature and the physical theories of self-organization. She has been involved in research and teaching at various universities in Germany. From 2002 to 2015\, she was a lecturer at the Institute of Philosophy at the Technical University of Braunschweig\, where she initiated and organized the transdisciplinary cooperation “Culture and Space Travel” (with weekly lecture series at the “House of Science”\, art exhibitions at the University of Fine Arts\, and scientific conferences). Since 2015\, she has been chair of the Department of Culture and Spaceflight at the Institute of Space Systems at the Technical University of Braunschweig (IRAS). Since 2020 she is chair of the Expert Committee for Spaceflight and Culture at the German Aerospace Society (DGLR)\, and since 2022 head of the Space Philosophy Laboratory at Space Renaissance International (SRI). She is also a scientific member of the University of Düsseldorf. Her main focus is on the classical philosophy of space travel from antiquity to modern times\, a field of research and teaching she founded. The term Transterrestrialism®\, which she coined and registered as a word mark\, is the name of a new discipline in the cultural sciences and humanities that deals with the philosophical prerequisites and cultural history of space travel\, as well as with fundamental paradigm shifts in the image of humanity\, in modes of perception and categories of thought\, and with the future possibilities of new forms of living and interaction in space. SUMMARY:SRIC4 #09: "Androids and Astronauts: The Key to Advancing Civilization Off-World"
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #09 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\nBy Frank White – November 10\, 2025 – © Copyright\, Frank White\, 2025\, All Rights Reserved \nThis webinar will examine the moral and ethical implications of using AI-enabled robots (androids) to assist in advancing human civilization beyond Earth. It seems unlikely that the dream of billions of people living and working in the solar ecosystem can be realized without the assistance of machines more suitable for survival in outer space than we ourselves are. This will be difficult and dangerous work\, so is it acceptable for humans to use our creations to avoid the hazards posed by a hostile environment to ourselves? If they are “just machines\,” perhaps there is no problem\, but what if they are something more? What if they are sentient\, or self-aware\, or conscious? Or might become so? Then\, we might be making a grave mistake that will haunt us and our descendants. In this session\, we will consider the value of “mutuality\,” an approach that envisions humans and intelligent robots working together to create a positive future\, on Earth and beyondwhile paying attention to the welfare of both. \nA short bio\nFrank White is a magna cum laude graduate of Harvard College\, a member of Phi Beta Kappa\, and a Rhodes Scholar. He earned an M.Phil. in Politics from Oxford University. Frank’s book\, The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution\, is considered by many to be a seminal work in the field of space studies. He has authored or co-authored additional books on a wide range of topics\, including SETI\, AI\, and climate change. Frank is also co-executive editor of Sentient Media\, LLC\, President and Board Chair of the Human Space Program\, and a Professor at Kepler Space University.\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/live/3H_1XRspAno\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1499824564603229/

SUMMARY:SRIC4 #07: "Space Based Solar Power and the New Paradigm of the Space Industry"
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #07 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\nThe idea of generating solar energy in space and beaming it down to Earth using lasers or microwaves is not new. Isaac Asimov envisioned a large space-based solar power satellite transmitting energy to Earth in his 1941 short story Reason. Later\, in 1968\, Peter Glaser described the SBSP concept in greater detail and obtained a patent for it. The concept was further studied by ERDA\, but by the early 1980s the project was discontinued. During the 1980s and 1990s\, however\, new technologies emerged\, and several global efforts—particularly in Japan—advanced the technology readiness level of wireless power transmission. In the early 2000s\, a study by the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) concluded that the SBSP concept is technically feasible. This year\, new studies have identified five concepts with strong potential for commercial viability\, and multiple startups worldwide have successfully raised funding to pursue them. In recent years\, we have witnessed a new paradigm in the space industry. The sharp reduction in launch costs\, the emergence of highly modular SBSP architectures\, and the growing global demand for clean energy have positioned SBSP as a promising emerging space market. This lecture provides a concise historical overview and explains the reference SBSP concept evaluated in the 1980s. It then highlights modern advancements and shows how new designs overcome the challenges faced by earlier concepts. A brief review of the most commercially viable SBSP architectures is also included. \nA short bio\nGhanim Alotaibi is a PhD candidate at the University of Strathclyde. His research project is thermal management for an advanced Solar Power Satellite (SPS) concept with the aim of advancing the Technology Readiness Level (TRL). As a mechanical engineer graduated from Kuwait University\, Ghanim started his career as a petroleum engineer at Kuwait Oil Company. After obtaining a degree in astronomy and completed his master’s in solar energy (photovoltaics) from Freiburg University\, he proposed the first satellite for Kuwait University. The satellite project was funded and it was successfully launched in January 2023. Ghanim was an active member in many space non-profit organizations. In the past\, Ghanim was the Middle East Regional Coordinator of the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC). Currently\, he is the project manager for the Moon Village – Participation of Emerging Space Countries (MV-PESC). The aim of the project is to bring developing countries to perform moon projects. In addition\, Ghanim is a board member at the Space Renaissance Initiative (SRI) and co – chairing the towards the young generation committee. Ghanim’s exposure to space research and the wider space community motivated him to initiate and lead countless activities to bring concepts of advancing human civilization into space to developing countries. For this reason\, he founded Advance Space Civilization Initiative (ASCI) where he offers courses about the topic for the general audience focusing on developing countries.\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/6TGfcN1Xawo \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1471951040553020/

SUMMARY:SRIC4 #06: "Cake O'Peace"
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #06 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\nPeace of Cake is a symbolic culinary project called “Cake O’Peace” associated with Guy Pignolet from La Réunion. It evokes the Apollo-Soyouz docking system as a metaphor for peace. Guy Pignolet\, a Senior Space Educator involved with the Réunion Island Space Initiative\, and Julien Leveneur promote this initiative as a call for peace through a symbolic cake. Events related to this include a Space Renaissance Webinar on December 1\, 2025\, featuring Guy Pignolet and Julien Leveneur\, and the upcoming publication of a related book on December 20\, 2025. This project ties together space themes and peace advocacy using a culinary metaphor linked to Réunion Island and its community.Together with the French Champion of Pastry Julien Leveneur\, we are launching the Peace of Cake project of home pastry cooking of cakes in the shape of the APAS docking system for the world promotion of the Apollo-Soyuz industry cooperation spirit that will help the development of SRI visions. We shall ask people worldwide to make cakes in their kitchens and tell their families\, neighbours\, and their local economic community. We shall ask them to send their recipe and two pictures of their cakes. We shall make a limited selection of the most interesting contributions\, and edit an internet book that will also mention all the contributors worldwide. \nA short bio\nGuy Pignolet is a senior space educator and researcher originally from the French/European island of La Réunion. He is an alumnus of the prestigious École Polytechnique and holds a PhD-AbD in behavioral sciences and organization from Cornell University. His career path has been diverse\, ranging from working with petroleum companies in the Middle East\, Nigeria\, and Indonesia to serving 22 years at the French National Centre for Space Studies (CNES)\, focusing on interplanetary future plans and space education. SUMMARY:SRIC4 #02: "Lagrange Factory and Geo-Lunar Space Industrialization"
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #02 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\nThe utilization of the natural resources of our Moon and the Near Earth Asteroids for the benefit of mankind will need industrial plants in space. The favourite locations for an initial space factory are the Lagrange Points of the Earth-Moon system. There are five Lagrangean Points which provide an equilibrium between the gravity forces of Earth and Moon. Especially in the points L4 and L5 an object remains in a stable position because there is a triangle between the object\, the Earth and the Moon. Building the first space factory e.g. in L5 will enable us to process material and procuce goods in zero gravity. Unlike on Earth or on the Moon solar power is available for 24 hours. The industrialization of cis-lunar space will start with the mining of our Moon. The Lagrange Space Factory (LSF) will start with the processing of lunar material and extract iron\, aluminium\, titanium and other materials from lunar regolith. An additional source for material will be the recycling of orbital debris to clean up Earth orbit. In the long run the LSF will also process asteroid material including gold\, platinum and carbon. The goal is to produce building material like steel bars\, aluminium panels\, tubes and bricks for future space habitats. Furthermore oxygen and space-made rocket propellant can be produced. The design of LSF should be modular to keep the structure flexible and expandable. Based on Public-Private Partnership the modules could be rent by private companies for industrial production. \nA short bio\nWerner Grandl graduated at the Technical University of Vienna in 1984\, as architect and civil engineer. He published several papers on studies for space stations and space colonies\, utilization of lunar and asteroid resource. He is Member of the SRI Board of Directors and Chair of the Space Renaissance Academy Space Tech & Industry Committee\, and co-chair of the SR Academy Space Habitats Committee.\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/K8RKG-hS-C0 \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1252587536621067/

SUMMARY:SRICA4 #01: Island Zero: A practical gateway to large-scale space habitats – with Jerry Stone
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #01 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\n In the 1970s\, Gerard O’Neill developed plans for large space habitats. One that could house 10\,000 people was a level of design known as “Island One”. This would be different from anything launched previously\, as it would rotate to produce simulated gravity. Designs for space habitats have always assumed that they would operate under 1g. But do we need 1G? What about 0.9g\, 0.8g or less? We’d need a much smaller structure first\, to carry out the required medical research. This would also demonstrate the viability of some of the ideas behind space habitation\, and later versions would house the personnel that will assemble the main structures. This initial unit is designated as “Island Zero”. Here is an opportunity to hear about this new development straight from the designer. “The most practical 1-g space station concept I have seen” \nA short bio\n\nJerry Stone is a Freelance Space Presenter; running Spaceflight UK and giving presentations on a range of topics on astronomy and space exploration all over the UK and abroad. Jerry is a fellow of the British Interplanetary Society and the Royal Astronomical Society\, a member of the Board of the Space Renaissance International\, and chair of the Space Habitats Committee. He has ran a project at the British Interplanetary Society\, to re-examine and update the original space habitat studies. This became the SPACE Project – Study Project Advancing Colony Engineering\, which also resulted in a new design for what we called “Island Zero”\, as described above. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/J7AW_NPKyJE\n\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1284186396575785/

SUMMARY:SRIC4 #00: "Announcing the 4th SRI World Congress"
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #00 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\nHuman civilization stands at a critical juncture. Global crises—wars\, nationalism\, cultural decline\, and environmental degradation—are worsening our quality of life and blocking pathways for progress\, particularly for younger generations. If unchecked\, this trajectory could lead to collapse. Civilian Space Development offers a viable alternative. By expanding into outer space\, humanity can open new frontiers for sustainable growth. Space resources and habitats\, as envisioned by Gerard K. O’Neill\, can provide clean energy\, vast living space\, and abundant raw materials while protecting Earth’s biosphere. Moving industry off-planet and establishing self-sufficient colonies on and around the Moon\, Mars\, and asteroids can prevent resource wars\, foster cooperation\, and ensure the survival and flourishing of civilization.\nThe SRI 2026 IV World Congress will bring together thinkers\, innovators\, and space humanists to:\n– Raise awareness of current risks to civilization and culture\n– Promote accelerated civilian space development\n– Debate priorities in space policy\, philosophy\, and strategy\n– Build coalitions to advance industrialization and settlement beyond Earth\nCall for Papers: We invite contributions that address how humanity can transcend present limits and grow into outer space. While technical and business proposals are welcome\, emphasis will be on political\, cultural\, and philosophical frameworks that can inspire action.\nSubmit your abstract: https://2026.spacerenaissance.space/i…\nRegistration will open soon.\nThe time has come to shift focus from mere survival to expansion\, progress\, and a renaissance of human civilization in space. \nA short bio\nAdriano Vittorio Autino\, born in Moncrivello (VC\, Italia)\, is CEO\, co-founder and former President of the Space Renaissance Initiative\, since 2010 Space Renaissance International (SRI)\, an inter-cultural non-profit association\, whose mission is the opening of the space frontier: low-cost access to space\, space tourism\, industrialization of the geo-lunar space\, use of near Earth asteroids\, and the full development of space economy. SUMMARY:A Space 18th SDG for the Future\, Hybrid Workshop at U.N. Plaza 777\, NYC
DESCRIPTION:2025 is a crucial year. United Nations and its subsidiaries will perform two important re-examinations: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (the 17 SDGs\, issued in 2015)\, and the Space 2030 Agenda (issued in 2021). The Space 18th SDG Coalition already developed a substantial critical review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and advanced a fundamental amendment: to add an 18th SDG\, focused on Civilian-led Space Development. The Space 18th SDG Coalition also wants to bring its contribution to the discussion on the Space 2030 Agenda. All the Space Advocacy Organizations are warmly suggested to perform a critical review of such text. Space Renaissance International already initiated the work\, and will soon propose a general review and some key amendments. While the most relevant concern in the Agenda is sustainability\, space is only conceived as a tool to support sustainability on Earth’s surface. There’s no mention of outer space as an arena of possible expansion and development for human civilization. No mention of space settlement\, nor of its fundamental contribution to solving the social and economic issues of civilization. Possible amendments should remediate such an incredible lack: to add an Overarching Objective 5\, on Civilian Space Development\, Space Settlement\, and Industrialization\, as key factors of sustainable development\, having social\, economic\, and environmental concerns as primary criteria\, in reshaping the Space 2030 Agenda. The day includes two main modules: – Module #01 – Symposium for the Future\, starting 9 am\, New York time – Module #02 – Round table on 5 sessions: Space 2030 Agenda – a Critical Review\, Space for Peace\, Space for Sustainable Economic and Social Growth\, Space for Young Generations\, Space for Earth’s Environment and Sustainable Development – starting 2:30 pm\, New York time Many speakers and panelists\, including well known public figures as Bob Zubrin and Frank White\, diplomats and activists for human rights at U.N.\, like Claire Nelson\, will be questioned about the critical issues faced by civilization\, that require concrete actions before 2030. The meaningful concepts that will emerge during the workshop will be the subject of a final recommendation and will be key parts of the narration brought ahead by the Coalition’s representatives at U.N. COPUOS\, ECOSOC and\, even most important\, to the public audience worldwide. The workshop is also intended to be a useful conceptual input to the two meaningful U.N. instances\, occurring in September\, in the same location in NYC: the Summit of the Future (SOTF)\, and the U.N. 79th General Assembly. \n\n\nLinks\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/live/rFyAqmb4yhs\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1156074145490194/

SUMMARY:“Space For All: Sustainability & Peace\, on Earth and Beyond”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe United Nations Committee for the Peaceful Use of Outer Space (COPOUOS) is holding 2 important sessions in springtime: the Legal SubCommittee on 15-25 April\, and the General Assembly 67th on 18-28 June. Such discussions\, preceding the U.N. General Assembly 79th\, which will take place in September\, focus on space resources. In the context of the incoming cislunar economy\, the legal\, scientific\, and technical aspects of lunar and asteroid resources mining\, extraction\, property\, industrial\, and intellectual properties\, are of primary importance. The current geopolitical conjuncture is characterized by two devastating wars at the doors of Europe\, and the dawn of astropolitics\, with several competing Moon initiatives. The broad support for the two main lunar initiatives – the ARTEMIS Accords and the ILRS – testify to the great interest of all the Earth’s Countries to be part of space development. \nSRI and NSS\, representing nearly 100 coalized co-promoters\, are participating to the COPUOS sessions in Vienna\, supporting a proposed 18th SDG\, focused on civilian-led space development\, to be added to the U.N. 2030 Agenda. With the purpose of supporting our delegation at COPUOS\, we have organized a virtual round table\, on the 12 of June 2024\, that will be live-streamed on the Space Renaissance YouTube channel. Everybody is invited to attend and to interact with the panelists via the YouTube chat. \nThe event includes a broad set of topics\, for 5 round-table panels: \n\nuse of space resources\, on Earth\, and in space\norbital debris\, mature waste management\, a circular blue economy on Earth\, on the Moon\, and in space\nspace law and private entities in space\nsustainable benefits for all peoples of planet Earth\nspace for sustainability and peace\, and sustainable space development\n\nWe call everybody to discuss with us: people from space-faring and not-yet-spacefaring countries\, what your expected benefits from space development\, and what your contribution to human evolution into a spacefaring civilization. \nLinks:\nFollow and interact live on the Space Renaissance Youtube channel: https://youtube.com/live/0jgKij9lWp8\nClick ‘going’ to the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/810580357786714/\n

SUMMARY:Greater Earth Energy Synergies
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nIn the context of ESA’s open call for proposals “Clean Energy from Space” which sought novel ideas related to Space-Based Solar Power (SBSP) systems\, Astrostrom GmbH has been investigating the feasibility of the “Greater Earth Lunar Power Station” (GE⊕-LPS) designed to provide power from space to operations on the lunar surface. This is a crewed facility in lunar orbit that will be constructed primarily from lunar materials. If shown to be both feasible and scalable\, manufacturing future Solar Power Satellite (SPS) components from lunar materials and transporting these to geostationary orbit (GEO)\, would be a means to avoid the need to launch hundreds or thousands of massive SPSs from the surface of the Earth in order to supply environmentally benign\, baseload electricity to Earth.  […] The GE⊕-LPS is a is a concept that advances lunar development in order to contribute to terrestrial energy production. The construction of GE⊕-LPS with lunar materials requires developing facilities on the Moon for automated mining and manufacturing processes. […] The establishment of industrial-scale beneficiation and processing plants will provide access to several materials\, which may become valuable to other users in the cislunar region. In addition to small amounts of Helium-3\, a vast amount of oxygen will be produced as a by-product which can be used in life support systems and as rocket propellant\, thereby creating business cases for new cislunar enterprises. GE⊕-LPS is being designed to provide plentiful electrical power for lunar activities; serve as a gateway between Earth and Moon operations; and be a prototype for future space settlements and tourism in cislunar space. As it is foreseen that the energy production functions of the GE⊕-LPS concept can be scaled to any dimension\, larger versions could be positioned in Earth orbit to provide much needed clean\, continuous solar electricity for terrestrial users. Driven by the ever-growing energy market on Earth\, a two-planets economic system will emerge\, which will dramatically lower the costs of transporting people and resources between LEO and the lunar surface\, and accelerate the growth of many new cislunar businesses. As such\, the GE⊕-LPS project unites the aims of lunar development with widely shared aspirations for expanded space activities\, while also addressing the critical energy and environmental needs of human civilization on Earth. \nShort bios\n\nArthur R. SUMMARY:An 18th SDG: Space for All\, on Earth and Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nSince 2015\, reusable rockets have dramatically decreased the cost of transportation from Earth to orbit. Such process is paving the path toward a civilian space development and astropolitical uses of space as well. 2015 can now be identified as a “turning point” in history\, signifying a change of paradigm\, from “traditional” aerospace to a “new space” age.The U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development\, adopted in 2015\, was conceptualized during the traditional aerospace age: outer space was not considered\, as a dimension that helps to increase the sustainability of development. A similar complete denial of the contribution of space to sustainability was the so-called “limits to growth” concept\, issued by the Club of Rome and the MIT in 1972. Despite all the dismissive denials\, space science and technologies are supporting social and environmental goals on Earth\, for many years. Yet that will not be enough. To allow a real sustainable development\, it is indispensable and urgent to start a civilian space development\, outside Earth boundaries. In order to decrease our ecological footprint on planet Earth\, we don’t need to reduce or stop our development\, that would imply a rapid decay of civilization. As stated in the 1986 U.N. resolution\, development is a universal civil right\, therefore we need a more advanced concept of sustainability: the only way to moderate their footprint on Earth\, for 8 billion terrestrials\,  would be to commence development elsewhere. The UN 2030 Agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals needs to be updated\, to encompass space as an essential asset for sustainable development\, on Earth and beyond. \nInterest is growing around such proposal\, and several space development and advocacy groups are joining together to support this idea including the National Space Society International Committee\, Space Renaissance International\, Expanding Frontiers\, The Beyond Earth Institute\, and many others. \nThe above alliance is proposing an 18th SDG to be added: \n“Space for All\, on Earth and Beyond\, a civilian-led space development\, with human communities living and working in outer space to expand and multiply benefits to all the peoples of Earth.” \nDuring the virtual event of 12 June 2023\, all of the promoters will announce the #Space18SDG initiative to the world\, providing a choral presentation of their rationales and motivations for supporting this great historic campaign. \nA report will also be provided about the COPUOS(*) 66th session\, 31 May – 9 June\, in which the NSS representatives will officially propose the 18th SDG to the COPUOS State Parties. \nAmong the Speakers\nAl Anzaldua (NSS)\, Bernard Foing (SRI)\, Bob Zubrin (The Mrs Society)\, Frederick Jenet (NSS)\, Karlton Johnson (NSS)\, Marlène Losier (SRI)\, Frank White (HSP)\, Steve Wolfe (BEI)\, Sam Coniglio (Space Tourism Society)\, Adriano V. SUMMARY:The Role of Space Habitat Technology in Developing Robust Sustainable Communities on Earth
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nAlthough most advocates of space settlement have focused on the potential value of natural resources and energy from space to nations on Earth the most important contribution will from the technology that will be developed to enable sustainable communities in space. The technologies necessary to create the closed cycle economy that is required for communities in space will result in the creation of similar closed cycle economies on Earth enabling humanity to increase its independence of the cycles of nature that have impacted societies throughout history. Remote work\, robotic mining\, controlled environment agriculture\, molecular agriculture\, resource recycling and additive manufacturing will transform the Earth’s economy far more that the actual import of resources and energy from space by enabling society to make more efficient use of Earth’s limited resources. The theme of building communities in space will accelerate the research and integration of these technologies to create a new economic revolution that will transform human society. This theme also has the potential to reinvigorate the increase students in STEM fields by providing them with a worthwhile goal they would be able to personality contribute to achieving. \n\nA short bio\nThomas Matula\, Ph.D. is a Professor of Business Administration at Sul Ross State University – Rio Grande College. A futurist\, Dr. Matula\, research focus has been on the economic history of humanity and its expansion into space. His most recent research has been on crafting strategies for developing sustainable space communities and their potential benefits to creating a sustainable economy on Earth. Dr. Matula earned his BGS in General Studies from New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology in 1983 and both an MBA and a Ph.D. in Business Administration from New Mexico State University. SUMMARY:The booming new space economy - Adriano V. Autino
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe new space economy is booming at increasing pace\, since the first years of 21st Century. The sector moved first steps\, from 1997 to 2004\, when about 20 companies competed to win the X-Prize. The $10 million Ansari XPRIZE was conceived and funded by the philanthropists Peter Diamandis and Gregg Maryniak\, with the purpose of reducing the risk and cost of going into space\, incentivizing the creation of a reliable\, reusable\, privately funded manned spacecraft\, so as to finally make private space travel commercially viable. Before the Ansari XPRIZE\, spaceflight was the sole responsibility of governments. Space tourism was considered too dangerous and expensive for the general public Space exploration was neither possible nor affordable for the private sector. The 27 September and October 4 2004\, Scaled Composites won the X-Prize: it’s vehicle SpaceShipOne had flown 2 times over 100 km altitude in one week\, piloted by Mike Melvill and Brian Binnie. That was the trigger. Low cost access to space was demonstrated\, and many brave entrepreneurs and investors started to work and push the new space economy to grow up. 2015 can be considered the second key milestone\, when Elon Musk and its company Space X\, demonstrated the reusability of the rockets’ first stage. A new space company\, Space X is now leader of the launch market worldwide\, having downsized the cost of the orbital launches from $50.000 / Kg to current $1.500 / Kg. When fully reusable orbital vehicles will be available (Starship)\, we can expect a further downsizing of the cost to orbit\, at $100/Kg. and less. The global value of the space economy is now worth about $0.5 trillion\, and likely will reach $1.5 trillions before 2030. The space economy is leading the global economy development\, and demonstrates more and more to be the sole sustainable development\, in this first half of the 21st Century. This lecture covers the past\, the present and the future of the space economy\, providing a comprehensive look on the industry and growing market.\n \nA short bio\n\nAdriano Vittorio Autino\, born in Moncrivello (VC\, Italia)\, is co-founder and former President of the Space Renaissance Initiative\, since 2010 Space Renaissance International (SRI)\, an inter-cultural non-profit association\, whose mission is the opening of the space frontier: low-cost access to space\, space tourism\, industrialization of the geo-lunar space\, use of near Earth asteroids\, and the full development of space economy. Adriano is diplomed in Industrial Electronics\, acting since 1971 as a software and system engineer\, then project manager and entrepreneur in the field of real-time automation systems. His insatiable curiosity and the desire to engage in frontier fields have led him to work in the aerospace environment\, and to devise and develop an integrated software system\, supporting the systems engineering and the project lifecycle management processes. Adriano authored and co-authored several books\, papers and articles on the theme of civilization expansion into the outer space. \nLinks\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/live/LdgY34EpINs\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/524620919600099 \nAdriano Autino’s book “A greater world is possible” is available on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/greater-world-possible-expansion-civilization/dp/1727889924

SUMMARY:Celebrating (and Continuing) Women’s Contributions to Our Push for the Stars - Priscilla Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nPotentially half of the world’s coming contributions toward a human presence on Mars could lie in the hands of women. They will surely help us get there – but – in order to get the full picture of how we got to this point\, and to encourage future contributions\, we should make clearly known our recognition of the contributions they’ve already made.\nThis presentation will share and celebrate several “modern” key female contributors. It will include an offering of their backgrounds\, hurdles\, motivations\, and contributions; presented through both word and art. Images will include special selections from a new art collection highlighting these space luminaries in portraits; portraits with unusual storytelling approaches\, but using very classic and embracing styles. Included will be women who have made contributions from Astronomy to Engineering\, from Apollo program seamstresses to astronauts; from people who are household names\, to those with names few are familiar with. Highlighted will be the encouragement and assistance these achievers and luminaries offered from family and friends\, both male and female. “No man…(or woman – OR GREAT ENDEAVOR)… is an island”. Examples of the importance of reaching out and encouraging all potential contributors and allies will be shared. Our progress towards a human presence on Mars is not to be viewed as inevitable. It is not inevitable without contributions and support from all. The presentation will close with a call to encourage\, assist\, and invest in future contributions from women.\n \nAn essential bio\n\nPriscilla Thomas shares the wonder that exists where space & soul collide. Her art has been featured in books & in magazines\, including Astronomy Magazine’s 50 Greatest Cosmic Scenes edition. She has presented at the Space Renaissance International Fair in Berlin\, Germany; and at the Mars Society’s International Convention. SUMMARY:Island Zero - the SPACE Project
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nIn 2013 Jerry Stone set up The SPACE Project – (Study Project Advancing Colony Engineering) – at the British Interplanetary Society\, to update the concept from the 1970s of a 10\,000-person space habitat at the EarthMoon L5 location. Jerry started the project not by setting goals or saying what topics they should cover\, but by asking the team members to come up with questions that would need to be answered as they progressed. He put the first one to the team himself: “All habitat designs have assumed that they will be rotated to simulate 1g\, but do we need 1g? How about 0.9g\, 0.8g or even less? There would be less stress on the structure\, meaning it wouldn’t need as much material for its construction; there would also be less stress on its inhabitants – on their cardiovascular system\, their muscles and their skeletal framework. Over time\, they grow taller to a degree\, and we’d have to take account of this in the architecture.” “However an associated question is; How low can a value of gravity be before it becomes a problem rather than an advantage?” The answer to that is; “Nobody knows”\, because it’s never been done! Another question is; “We wouldn’t start construction of an Island One habitat straight off. We’d need the assembly plant; before that\, the manufacturing facilities; and before that\, somewhere to house the construction team. How could that be done?” This presentation describes a development from The SPACE Project that came to be termed “Island Zero” which looks at a way of investigating low-gravity structures\, and would also also vastly aid the main habitat construction – Jerry has referred to them as “Portakabins in space”. Yet they would be relatively lowcost\, and could have many uses apart from building Island One – and larger – structures. \n\n \n\nA short bio \nJerry Stone is the founder of Spaceflight UK\, a Fellow of the British Interplanetary Society\, former President of The Mars Society UK and a Freelance Space Presenter. He is member of the SRI Board of Directors\, as well. Jerry gave his first space talk at school back in 1969 when he was 14; now he does this for a living. He has spoken on space topics at many venues\, including The Edinburgh Festival; various Mars Society Conferences; Oxford University; The Palace of Westminster; The Royal Institution; The Royal Observatory; and a rock festival! He presents space workshops in schools across the UK\, inspiring pupils with a range of activities. He is developing a new workshop that will allow pupils to simulate what the ESA’s ExoMars rover will do on Mars\, investigating soil samples for evidence of life. He is often interviewed on TV and radio\, covering space mission and astronomy events. He was also interviewed for Blue Peter about how rockets work! He is a space author. He is described as “One of the leading speakers on space exploration”. \nLinks\nFollow the Livestream on YouTube: https://youtube.com/live/Bo_ituoCV28\nClick ‘going’ to the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1248924719301957

SUMMARY:The Sociology of the Lunar Settlement - with Riccardo Campa
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe possibility that\, in a not too distant future\, a human settlement could be established on the Moon becomes increasingly real. Sociological knowledge invites us not to underestimate social problems that could arise in a dangerous lunar environment. Issues of social order and effective collaboration among settlers from different cultures may be particularly sensitive. Physical and physiological stressors caused by the lunar environment can amplify the psychological and sociological stressors that characterize any work environment. Where even air is an essential and rare good\, sabotage by individuals or non-integrated groups can be lethal for the entire community. The emergence of unwanted phenomena such as anomie and “free riding” is possible. Recommendations from the sociological literature on space exploration— particularly with regard to selection and training of space crews—may still prove useful in preventing conflicts when the human presence on the Moon is limited to a base of a few dozen astronauts and technicians. This study suggests that selection should take into account not only the professional skills and mental status of the settlers but also their degree of “sociological imagination.”\nA short bio\nRiccardo Campa (born May 4\, 1967 in Mantua) is Professor of Sociology at the Jagiellonian  University of Cracow. He posses two Master of Arts degrees\, in Political Science and Philosophy\, from the University of Bologna and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the Nicholas Copernicus University in Torun\, Poland. Prior to becoming an academic\, Campa was a police lieutenant with Guardia di Finanza and a Journalist for La Voce di Mantova and the newsmagazine Il Mondo. Campa has authored or edited many books. Among them Epistemological Dimensions of Robert Merton’s Sociology (2001)\, Il filosofo e’ nudo (2001)\, Etica della scienza pura (2007)\, and Mutare o perire: La sfida del transumanesimo (2010). He is also chief editor of the academic journal Divenire. Rassegna di studi interdisciplinari sulla tecnica e il postumano. His articles frequently appear in MondOperaio\, an Italian socialist journal. He founded and is currently president of the Italian Transhumanist Association\, served as director of the World Transhumanist Association (2006-2008)\, and is Fellow of the Institute for Ethics and Emerging Technologies.\n\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://youtu.be/k9y5qmEuw0g\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/2986138721680788

SUMMARY:Outer Space Activities and the Future of City
DESCRIPTION:We create and shape our surroundings. Thereafter\, our surroundings shape us. \nNew cities are emerging\, established towns are growing and expanding\, and many metropolises are merging to become megalopolises around the globe. And urban infrastructures around the world are coping hard to adjust to new pressures including the huge population migration from rural to urban regions\, climate change effects\, and vital resources\, all in an effort to sustain and enhance the quality of life of the citizen. Providing a safe\, productive and nurturing environment for the city dweller is the overarching directive and prime aim of every city management. Enhancing and safely delivering a range of cradle-to-grave activities to sustain the quality of life of the citizen including incorporating agile\, responsive systems for health and welfare\, economic opportunities\, leisure safety and security are all part of the current and evolving Smart City paradigm.\n \n\nJust as the space exploration community is expanding our presence into the solar system and beyond\, a group of thought leaders\, including visionary policy makers\, architects\, engineers and allied professionals are peering at Earth\, studying co-relations of various dynamic systems including land use\, air and sea agents\, and finding new ways to report and apply the data from space-based assets\, for the immediate betterment of humanity. Our cosmopolitan cities\, urban and suburban landscapes and dwellings are already using space assets including crew on orbiting space stations and allied technologies to monitor\, inform and enhance quality of life. Orbiting spacecraft also help predict\, alert and even prevent hazards\, both natural and manmade\, from affecting populations adversely. Future cities and their amenities including active adaptive and agile response systems that use artificial intelligence are already shaping the built environment. \nA short bio\nMadhu Thangavelu conducts the ASTE 527 graduate Space Exploration Architectures Concept Synthesis Studio in the Department of Astronautical Engineering within the Viterbi School of Engineering at the University of Southern California.
