SUMMARY:SRIC4 #04: "The Civilization Survival Scale and Space Settlement"
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #04 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\nThe Civilization Survival Scale is in provides a powerful argument based in evolutionary biology for human expansion into space. It recognizes that the survival of a civilization\, as the survival of a species\, is dependent on its ability to adapt highly diverse and changing habits. Unlike the very popular Kardashev Scale\, which is built around ever greater energy consumption\, the Civilization Survival Scale is based firmly on the principles of evolutionary biology. It recognizes that the survival of human civilization lies in replacing the brute force approach of the Kardashev Scale with a scientific approach  based on acquiring the technology and knowledge to adapt to diverse habitats. The technology we develop to build communities in diverse habitats throughout the Solar System will expand our ability to thrive in diverse environments here on Earth. Rather than abandoning the Earth\, the Civilization Survival Scale demonstrates how humanity expanding into the Solar System and beyond enhances the survivability and quality of life for humans on Earth. The advanced food production systems required to sustain communities in space will enable farming on Earth to become more resilient to environmental disruptions while expanding it to new environments. Similarly\, recycling technology developed by communities in space will be used to reduce the environmental impact of communities on Earth. The Civilization Survival Scale provides a solid scientific foundation for justifying our need to evolve into a spacefaring society. It illustrates that the best hope of humanity surviving into the future is to become a Level 2 Civilization on the Civilization Survival Scale by developing the technology to multiple habitats in our solar system. \nA short bio\nThomas L. Matula\, Ph.D. is a Professor of Business Administration at Sul Ross State University in Texas and holds a Ph.D. in Business Administration from New Mexico State University. SUMMARY:SRIC4 #03: "Space Shields to Terraform Mars and Protect Earth from Solar Storms"
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #03 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\nThe sun is the source of life on Earth and it supplies Earth with thousands of times the amount of Energy we use. Yet Solar wind and radiation and especially Coronal Mass Ejections that could if were to be as powerful as the Carrington Event of 1859 could wipe out much of the World’s electrical power grid system and perhaps take down the Internet. Lloyd’s of London estimated that a Carrington Event solar storm would require 3 trillion dollars to bring back just the North American power grid. Mars\, unlike Earth\, has virtually none of its magnetic field protection left and thus the solar wind alone strips away its atmosphere. There have been studies by NASA and other research institutes that have examine the possibility of creating magnetic shielding systems for Mars. This would use a combination of artificial satellites as well as Phobos and Deimos that could create a complex combination of magnetic shielding systems that could allow the terraforming of a natural atmosphere on Mars that could sustain life. The Earth might also potentially be protected by a satellite system to augment the Earth’s natural geomagnetic field. A three-satellite network deployed by ESA and a 4 satellite network deployed by NASA has confirmed that the Earth’s magnetic field is in the process of reversal. Thus the North Magnetic Pole is moving down to Siberia and the South Magnetic Pole is moving up toward Australia. Computer modeling has suggested that during the reversal period the Earth’s magnetic field might be reduced to 15% of its protective shielding strength when the reversal is halfway complete. Earth has no suitable low orbiting satellites so a magnetic shielding system would be dependent entirely on artificial satellites. Such a network would be expensive to deploy and maintain its operation\, but it could potentially ultimately make Mars habitable with natural oceans and could save Earth from a devastating Coronal Mass Ejection that could have devestating economic impact where billions of jobs might be lost and trillions of dollars of would need to be spent to restore electrical power grids\, pipeline controls\, the Internet and communications networks and other vital infrastructure. Former Nasa Chief Scientist James Green and SRI Vice President Joseph Pelton jointly are carrying out research in this area to explore design architecture for magnetic shielding systems starting with Mars. \nA short bio\nJoseph N. Pelton\, Ph.D. is Chair of the Board of the Alliance for Collaboration in the Exploration of Space (ACES Worldwide) (acesworldwide.org). He is Dean Emeritus and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the International Space University. Dr. Pelton is Founder of the Arthur C. SUMMARY:SRIC4 #02: "Lagrange Factory and Geo-Lunar Space Industrialization"
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #02 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\nThe utilization of the natural resources of our Moon and the Near Earth Asteroids for the benefit of mankind will need industrial plants in space. The favourite locations for an initial space factory are the Lagrange Points of the Earth-Moon system. There are five Lagrangean Points which provide an equilibrium between the gravity forces of Earth and Moon. Especially in the points L4 and L5 an object remains in a stable position because there is a triangle between the object\, the Earth and the Moon. Building the first space factory e.g. in L5 will enable us to process material and procuce goods in zero gravity. Unlike on Earth or on the Moon solar power is available for 24 hours. The industrialization of cis-lunar space will start with the mining of our Moon. The Lagrange Space Factory (LSF) will start with the processing of lunar material and extract iron\, aluminium\, titanium and other materials from lunar regolith. An additional source for material will be the recycling of orbital debris to clean up Earth orbit. In the long run the LSF will also process asteroid material including gold\, platinum and carbon. The goal is to produce building material like steel bars\, aluminium panels\, tubes and bricks for future space habitats. Furthermore oxygen and space-made rocket propellant can be produced. The design of LSF should be modular to keep the structure flexible and expandable. Based on Public-Private Partnership the modules could be rent by private companies for industrial production. \nA short bio\nWerner Grandl graduated at the Technical University of Vienna in 1984\, as architect and civil engineer. He published several papers on studies for space stations and space colonies\, utilization of lunar and asteroid resource. He is Member of the SRI Board of Directors and Chair of the Space Renaissance Academy Space Tech & Industry Committee\, and co-chair of the SR Academy Space Habitats Committee.\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/K8RKG-hS-C0 \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1252587536621067/

SUMMARY:A search for life beyond Earth - How it works\, where it stands\, why it matters. With Bill Diamond
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe Search for Life Beyond Earth – How It Works\, Where It Stands and Why It Matters\, explores the science and technology of humanity’s efforts to understand the nature and prevalence of life and intelligence beyond Earth and answer the question “Are we alone in the Universe?” For most of human history this fundamental and profound question has been relegated to the domains of philosophy and religion. But with our ascent to a technological species\, manipulating the electromagnetic spectrum and having the capability to look for engineered phenomena coming from beyond our solar system – so-called ’technosignatures’ – the question of are we alone is now firmly within the grasp of modern science. In his presentation\, Mr. Diamond will describe the scientific ways in which we seek to find evidence of life beyond Earth\, the progress of efforts undertaken thus far\, and the impact and relevance of these efforts to science and to society as a whole. \nA short bio\nBill Diamond is a Silicon Valley technology veteran and current President and CEO of the SETI Institute in Mountain View\, California. The SETI Institute is a nonprofit astrophysics and astrobiology research and education organization focused on the study of life in the Universe. SUMMARY:SRICA4 #01: Island Zero: A practical gateway to large-scale space habitats – with Jerry Stone
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #01 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\n In the 1970s\, Gerard O’Neill developed plans for large space habitats. One that could house 10\,000 people was a level of design known as “Island One”. This would be different from anything launched previously\, as it would rotate to produce simulated gravity. Designs for space habitats have always assumed that they would operate under 1g. But do we need 1G? What about 0.9g\, 0.8g or less? We’d need a much smaller structure first\, to carry out the required medical research. This would also demonstrate the viability of some of the ideas behind space habitation\, and later versions would house the personnel that will assemble the main structures. This initial unit is designated as “Island Zero”. Here is an opportunity to hear about this new development straight from the designer. “The most practical 1-g space station concept I have seen” \nA short bio\n\nJerry Stone is a Freelance Space Presenter; running Spaceflight UK and giving presentations on a range of topics on astronomy and space exploration all over the UK and abroad. Jerry is a fellow of the British Interplanetary Society and the Royal Astronomical Society\, a member of the Board of the Space Renaissance International\, and chair of the Space Habitats Committee. He has ran a project at the British Interplanetary Society\, to re-examine and update the original space habitat studies. This became the SPACE Project – Study Project Advancing Colony Engineering\, which also resulted in a new design for what we called “Island Zero”\, as described above. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/J7AW_NPKyJE\n\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1284186396575785/

SUMMARY:SRIC4 #00: "Announcing the 4th SRI World Congress"
DESCRIPTION:This is the preliminary webinar #00 of the IV SRI World Congress (SRIC4)\nAbstract\nHuman civilization stands at a critical juncture. Global crises—wars\, nationalism\, cultural decline\, and environmental degradation—are worsening our quality of life and blocking pathways for progress\, particularly for younger generations. If unchecked\, this trajectory could lead to collapse. Civilian Space Development offers a viable alternative. By expanding into outer space\, humanity can open new frontiers for sustainable growth. Space resources and habitats\, as envisioned by Gerard K. O’Neill\, can provide clean energy\, vast living space\, and abundant raw materials while protecting Earth’s biosphere. Moving industry off-planet and establishing self-sufficient colonies on and around the Moon\, Mars\, and asteroids can prevent resource wars\, foster cooperation\, and ensure the survival and flourishing of civilization.\nThe SRI 2026 IV World Congress will bring together thinkers\, innovators\, and space humanists to:\n– Raise awareness of current risks to civilization and culture\n– Promote accelerated civilian space development\n– Debate priorities in space policy\, philosophy\, and strategy\n– Build coalitions to advance industrialization and settlement beyond Earth\nCall for Papers: We invite contributions that address how humanity can transcend present limits and grow into outer space. While technical and business proposals are welcome\, emphasis will be on political\, cultural\, and philosophical frameworks that can inspire action.\nSubmit your abstract: https://2026.spacerenaissance.space/i…\nRegistration will open soon.\nThe time has come to shift focus from mere survival to expansion\, progress\, and a renaissance of human civilization in space. \nA short bio\nAdriano Vittorio Autino\, born in Moncrivello (VC\, Italia)\, is CEO\, co-founder and former President of the Space Renaissance Initiative\, since 2010 Space Renaissance International (SRI)\, an inter-cultural non-profit association\, whose mission is the opening of the space frontier: low-cost access to space\, space tourism\, industrialization of the geo-lunar space\, use of near Earth asteroids\, and the full development of space economy. SUMMARY:Personal Liberty Vs. Safety and Celebration in Space
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nNew human societies forged off-world will face unforgiving constraints imposed by their physical environment. Respecting those constraints\, these societies will otherwise have wide organizational discretion. We propose that such societies should be derived from core consensual principles\, identified through discussion and debate by prospective residents. All culture and law can then emanate from these principles.  We expect that amongst these principles will be a commitment to maximizing personal liberties consistent with protecting the society as a whole from existential threats\, and providing for all material necessities through automation. In addition\, we argue that a commitment to the scientific method including first principles-based thinking and ever-evolving systems of systems\, will be wise. While many favor some sort of democratic system\, we note that such experiments have consistently failed over time. We argue that effective and sustainable democracy is possible only when the Citizenry is well informed and committed to a shared vision and principles codified as a Charter. We therefore propose ending birthright Citizenship\, instead making it into an office\, available to all residents through a hard-won Rite of Passage. The Citizens can then BE the government; fulfilling the dream of government “Of\, by and for the People”. Others\, whether Residents or Visitors\, will have certain inalienable rights but no role in governance\, other than a veto on changes to the Charter. Much of this was accomplished in the highly successful yet largely forgotten Venetian Republic\, which failed only because it underestimated Napoleon. We can add systems of sustainable technological abundance based on emerging technologies and a deeper understanding of money. In particular\, given that all material wealth is some confluence of raw materials\, energy\, and organizing intelligence (AI software)\, such societies can be structured to automatically meet the basic needs of their residents whilst preserving individual liberties. \nA short bio\nJonathan Kolber is an author and investor. He wrote Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations: a 21st Century Translation and Commentary\, followed by A Celebration Society. He was the last seed investor in Cambridge Quantum Computing\, which later became Quantinuum. He proposes raising the experimental and disruptive approach of Silicon Valley to the level of society itself\, albeit tempered by consensual values. Jonathan shares his vision of science-driven model society\, based on ever-evolving systems\, which he and his allies call A Celebration Society. This provides a scaffolding upon which many different societal designs can be built. The preferred design offers a comprehensive solution that celebrates human greatness to inspire more greatness\, encouraging and building upon humanity’s finest qualities. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/lLUuKTQ571c \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/954859479937081/

SUMMARY:A Healthy Space Environment for all - avoiding the Kessler Syndrome - with Quentin Parker
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe question of human health in space in not limited to the human condition inside a Space Station but is increasingly dependent on the safety and health of the external environment. This is in terms of the orbital security of satellites\, space telescopes and space stations from the direct threat posed by the so-called Kessler Syndrome. It sounds like a medical condition or viral infection and indeed in some ways it is. The Kessler syndrome would be the ultimate result of the unchecked infection of LEO by vast swarms of large and small pieces of viral space debris which\, if unremediated\, will lead to the catastrophic cascading collapse of the entire ecosystem -ie the destruction of LEO as a viable environment for any satellite or spacecraft. In this talk I cover the issues and explore potential solutions the most important of which is accepting responsibility and committing to international co-operation and\, if necessary\, unilateral action. \nA short bio\nProfessor Quentin A Parker\, PhD\, BSc (hons)\, FRAS\, FASA. Quentin Parker obtained a PhD from the University of St. Andrews in 1986 and joined the faculty at the University of Hong Kong in March 2015 to take up the Headship of the Department of Physics. SUMMARY:Building data centers in space - with Philip Johnston
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThis talk explores an innovative approach to overcoming the energy and scalability challenges of powering the next generation of AI training infrastructures by moving data centers from Earth into orbit. As global energy demand surges due to rapid advances in AI and widespread electrification\, traditional terrestrial data centers face mounting obstacles—high operating costs\, cooling inefficiencies\, and lengthy permitting processes. Starcloud presents a visionary solution by leveraging near-uninterrupted\, high-intensity solar energy available in low Earth orbit\, where solar arrays operate at capacity factors exceeding 95%. The presentation will detail the design and operational advantages of modular orbital data centers. Utilizing reusable heavy-lift launch vehicles and modular\, container-based compute units\, these orbital installations can rapidly scale to multi-gigawatt levels without encountering the physical and regulatory constraints that limit Earth-bound facilities. In space\, passive radiative cooling replaces energy-intensive terrestrial systems\, resulting in drastic reductions in operating costs and environmental impact\, including lower greenhouse gas emissions and elimination of water usage for cooling. Connectivity and performance are maintained through advanced laser-based networking and optical communication systems\, ensuring the low-latency\, high-throughput links essential for training large-scale AI models. This novel approach not only addresses the looming energy crunch but also transforms the economics of data center operation\, making it feasible to deploy large-scale\, energy-efficient AI training clusters on a scale previously unimaginable. In summary\, this talk will provide an in-depth exploration of the technical\, economic\, and environmental benefits of constructing large data centers in space. By shifting the locus of AI training from Earth to orbit\, Starcloud aims to unlock a new era of rapid\, sustainable growth for artificial intelligence\, meeting the rising global demand for computing power in an energy-efficient manner. \nA short bio\nPhilip Johnston is the co-founder and CEO of Starcloud\, building large data centers in space. Philip is a second-time founder who previously spent time at McKinsey & Co. working on satellite projects for national space agencies. Philip has an MPA in National Security & Technology from Harvard University\, an MBA from Wharton\, an MA in Applied Mathematics & Theoretical Physics from Columbia University\, and is a CFA Charter holder. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/sUizPY8q2-U \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/2475910212774695/

SUMMARY:The Case of the Sexual Cosmos - new book by Howard Bloom
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe theory of entropy\, a basic tenet of science\, is wrong. \n\nAnother underlying scientific assumption\, Pierre Louis De Maupertuis’ law of least action\, is also wrong. \nThis is not a pinch-penny\, parsimonious cosmos. It is the opposite. It is a flagrantly materialist\, consumerist cosmos\, a cosmos that has invented vanity–piling up surplus\, then displaying it with panache. Flaunting\, flouncing and strutting your stuff. \nNature loves those who oppose her most. She favors those who reinvent her\, those who give her new powers. \nThis is a planet of climate catastrophe. With mass die-offs every 26.5 million years. And 99% of all the species that have ever lived extinguished by\, guess who? Nature. \nYet life flings a finger in the face of this poison pill of stone. Despite nonstop climate apocalypse\, life greens and gardens the place. Life’s next imperative: garden and green the poison pills of stone above our heads. Bring space to life by bringing life to space. \nMeanwhile\, invent climate stabilization technologies to overcome this planet’s wild mood swings. Invent climate stabilization technologies to sneak over\, around\, or above the next ice age or the next planetary warming\, a warming with carbon dioxide levels over twice what they are today. \nIn this cosmos\, it is not the most probable thing that happens. It is the most improbable. Sex is the ultimate example. Sex is not the shortest path to reproduction. In fact\, it is the longest path this universe has ever conceived.\n\nA short bio\nHoward Bloom has been called the Einstein\, Newton\, Darwin\, and Freud of the 21st century by Britain’s Channel 4 TV. He is the founder and chair of the Space Development Steering Committee\, the co-founder and co-chair of the Asian Space Technology Summit and on the Board of Governors of the National Space Society. Bloom is the author of eight books\, including The Lucifer Principle: A Scientific Expedition Into the Forces of History. One of his books\, Global Brain\, was the subject of a symposium thrown by the office of the Secretary of Defense\, with representatives from the State Department\, DARPA\, the Energy Department\, IBM\, and MIT. His work has been published in The Washington Post\, the Wall Street Journal\, Wired\, Psychology Today\, and the Scientific American. He has written articles for peer-reviewed journals or given lectures at scholarly conferences in twelve different scientific fields\, from quantum physics and cosmology to evolutionary biology\, neuroscience\, biopolitics\, information science\, and astronautics. And he has worked with Buzz Aldrin\, Michael Jackson\, Prince\, Billy Joel\, Paul Simon\, and Bob Marley. The eleventh president of India\, Dr. APJ Kalam\, calls Bloom “a visionary.” And in 2021\, an organization was established to further his work: The Howard Bloom Institute. Pavel Kurakin of the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Science in Moscow says that\, “Bloom has created a new Scientific Paradigm. He explains in vast and compelling terms why we should forget all we know in complicated modern math and should start from the very beginning. …Bloom’s Grand Unified Theory… opens a window into entire systems we don’t yet know and/or see\, new…collectivities that live\, love\, battle\, win and lose each day of our gray lives. I never imagined that a new system of thought could produce so much light.” Concludes Joseph Chilton Pierce\, the author of Evolution’s End and The Crack in the Cosmic Egg\, “I have finished Howard Bloom’s [first two] books\, The Lucifer Principle and Global Brain\, in that order\, and am seriously awed\, near overwhelmed by the magnitude of what he has done. I never expected to see\, in any form\, from any sector\, such an accomplishment. I doubt there is a stronger intellect than Bloom’s on the planet.” Home – Howard Bloom Institute. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/8PvjfKg2JZQ \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1027976905580373/

SUMMARY:Space as a physical location for sustainable development - with Juliana Rinaldi-Semione
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nSustainable development is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising future generations’ ability to do the same. When we think of sustainable development\, the future of society\, or what we will leave behind for the next generations\, nearly all of us picture the future of Earth. But with countries\, companies\, and individuals making meaningful advances toward inhabiting the Moon and Mars\, our responsibilities\, and future now concern both Earth and space. While space conversations around sustainable orbital traffic\, sustainable in-situ resource utilization\, and mining have gained significant traction\, these are only a part of the sustainability picture. Very little attention is paid to the implications of the social\, political\, and economic sustainability of our space activities. This fuller picture of sustainability has two sides to it: what happens on Earth to make space exploration possible and what happens in space once we settle there. The space sector must consider space itself a location for sustainable development precisely because we are setting up space to be a location for future generations of humans. This talk will elaborate on this two-sided consideration and present practical ideas about what sustainability on Earth and in space might look like when it comes to human settlements on Mars\, in particular. \nA short bio\nDr. Juliana Rinaldi-Semione is the Research Fellow in Future Worlds & Freedom and the SDGs in Space project lead in the Faculties of Engineering and Social Sciences at the University of Nottingham (UK). Juliana’s research interests center on applied space ethics within a sustainable development framework\, including future directions for cross-sector initiatives in aerospace production and for governance and societal structures around off-world colonization. She is passionate about synthesizing disparate bodies of knowledge to create and implement solutions to complex problems on Earth and on new worlds. With many years of implementing research in “real life\,” Juliana has designed impact pathways involving government\, policy\, and industry stakeholders. Previous projects have examined human rights in the transition to clean energy; developing a sustainability requirement for an electro-mechanical engineering apprenticeship course; and establishing how Mars can act as proof of concept for the global ethics and human values we ostensibly hold. Juliana has previously worked with global non-governmental organizations and in the public sector\, specializing in managing cross-sector\, multi-agency collaborative work. She is an alumna of the Space Generation Advisory Council. Originally from California (USA)\, Juliana holds an MA from King’s College London and a PhD from the University of Nottingham. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/9W_M3q3l9_s \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1324993632095629/

SUMMARY:Behind the 'Artist’s Rendition' - Art\, Illustration\, and the Space Age
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nAs long as humanity has dreamed of other worlds and how we might get there\, artists have been inspired to imagine and depict these worlds and what such amazing journeys might look like. Before the age of modern photography\, explorers were frequently accompanied by artists who created drawings and paintings of the unknown regions. This trend continued into the Space Age\, when artists were tapped to help visualize the space environment in the absence of cameras capable of reaching alien planets. “Behind the ‘Artist’s Rendition’ – Art\, Illustration\, and the Space Age” looks at the history of twentieth-century astronomical illustration and space art\, focusing on its role as both cultural artefact and a form of scientific visualization. I will examine how these illustrations have impacted popular culture. My talk will use the history and legacy of the International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA)\, founded in the early 1980s\, to structure its chronology. The IAAA\, a guild that professionalized around the accurate representations of space\, was behind some of the most iconic depictions of space produced during the United States’ exploration of the outer solar system. The IAAA\, which still exists today\, still collaborates closely with the astronomical and space exploration communities. \nA short bio\nAldo Spadoni is an aerospace engineer-futurist with over 40 years of experience supporting advanced NASA\, DARPA\, and US DoD programs. He created and managed an award-winning visualization team at Northrop Grumman. He is a team recipient of NASA’s Turning Goals Into Reality award and has several US patents to his credit. His consulting company\, Aerospace Imagineering\, specializes in the conceptual design and visualization of advanced aerospace technology concepts. Aldo is an accomplished artist\, illustrator and concept designer. He is the former President of the International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA). As a Hollywood technical consultant\, he supported the production of APOLLO 13\, STEALTH\, IRON MAN 1 & 2\, and other movie projects. He is currently the spacecraft technical advisor on the upcoming interstellar adventure film\, PERSEPHONE\, and the SPACE:1999 EAGLE documentary. Aldo’s personal goals are to promote STEAM education and create compelling visions of humanity’s spacefaring future. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/NAPwnC65h40 \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1371486994044325/

SUMMARY:Space Enthusiasm. Cultural History of the Early Space Pioneers in Germany - Dr. Marie-Luise Heuser
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe space movement from 1923 to 1933 was primarily a cultural phenomenon in Germany during the Weimar Republic. Neither the universities nor industry recognized the potential of space travel at the time. Often ridiculed as dreamers\, the space pioneers pursued their visionary goals\, founded the famous “Verein für Raumschiffahrt” in 1927 and carried out the first self-built rocket tests. They wrote science fiction stories\, were involved in the production of Fritz Lang’s legendary 1929 film “Woman in the Moon”\, invented scientifically based future scenarios and published metaphysical works. They were border crossers between cultures. We want to approach this cultural phenomenon from different angles and examine “technology fiction” as a philosophical concept. \nA short bio\nMarie-Luise Heuser studied philosophy\, history\, physics and mathematics at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf/ Germany and completed her doctorate with a thesis on Schelling’s philosophy of nature and the physical theories of self-organization. She worked in research and teaching at the universities of Düsseldorf\, Heidelberg\, Stuttgart and Braunschweig. From 2002-2015 she was a research assistant at the Department of Philosophy at the Technical University of Braunschweig and organizer of the transdisciplinary cooperation “Culture and Space”. From 2015-2020\, she headed the Department of Culture and Space at the Institute of Space Systems at TU Braunschweig. Since 2010 she has also been Managing Director of the Gesellschaft für Kultur und Raumfahrt e. V. (www.kulturraumfahrt.de)\, since 2020 Head of the Space and Culture Committee in the German Aerospace Society (DGLR)\, since 2022 Head of the Space Philosophy Laboratory of the Space Renaissance Academy\, and since 2024 she has been delegate to UN COPUOS. Her research interests are: Classical philosophy of space flight from antiquity to modernity\, metaphysics\, ontology\, anthropology\, philosophy of nature and philosophy of art. SUMMARY:Magnetic Shielding for atmospheric (re-)entry\, with Andrea Lani
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n(Re-)entry represents one of the most critical phases for space exploration missions. The safety of the expensive payload and/or human crew strongly depends on the spacecraft survival to the harsh conditions which are experienced during the hypersonic descent into the target planetary atmosphere\, involving high thermal loads on the vehicle surface. In addition\, at the highest speeds\, the surrounding gas ionizes forming a plasma sheath which can prevent radio signals to pass through\, leading to communication blackout which can last for minutes\, as in the case of the 4.5 minutes during the famous Apollo 13 re-entry. While previously confined solely to Sci-Fi movies\, magnetic shielding can now be seriously proposed and technologically pursued as a potential game-changer for tackling all these issues and for contributing to establish a safer and possibly more cost-effective era for space flight. To this end\, this presentation introduces MEESST (MHD Enhanced Entry System for Space Transportation)\, an international project that has developed and demonstrated the first magnetic shielding prototype for re-entry based on high-temperature superconductors (HTS)\, aiming at actively mitigating both high surface heating and communication blackouts. MEESST has been funded under the Pathfinder program of the European Innovation Council (EIC) and has involved 30+ scientists/engineer from 10 organizations (of which 4 SMEs) in 6 countries. The project has involved a combination of numerical modelling of plasma flows and radio communication blackout\, design/assembly/testing of a cryocooled probe integrating a HTS magnet\, and experimental measurements in high-enthalpy plasma wind-tunnels (i.e. the PWK1 arc-jet facility at the Institute for Space Systems in Stuttgart and the Plasmatron at the Von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics in Belgium). The vision\, methodology\, main results and achievements of MEESST will be presented\, together with a roadmap towards consolidating and establishing this technology as a disruptive solution to empower future space missions. \nA short bio\nDr. Andrea Lani (Ph.D. in Engineering Sciences\, MSc in aerospace engineering) is research/team manager at KU Leuven’s Center for mathematical Plasma Astrophysics\, AIAA member\, co-author of 100+ scientific papers and previously senior researcher at Von Karman Institute\, postdoc at NASA/Stanford Center for Turbulence Research and NATO Science & Technology technical member. Since 20+ years he has lead the development of models/software to simulate hypersonic flows around space vehicles and space weather as co-designer of the COOLFluiD (Computational Object-Oriented Libraries for Fluid Dynamics) and ESA VSWMC (Virtual Space Weather Modelling Center) platforms. He has been the PI of MEESST\, a large EU project (10 organizations) developing the first magnetic shielding demonstrator for space re-entry. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/dcXO-j6L9lg \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1277634080017458/

SUMMARY:2024 BX1 and the Ribbeck Meteorite Fall
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nIn the evening of Jan 20\, 2024\, Hungarian astronomer Krisztián Sárneczky discovered a small asteroid. It quickly became clear that this is an extraordinary object\, since it was on collision course with Earth. Just before midnight is was announced in social media\, that on January 21\, at 1:32\, the rock from space would enter the Earth atmosphere just west of Berlin\, and produce a dazzling fireball. In the first part of the talk we will present\, how we got notified of the events and what we did in the remaining hours till impact. We will describe what happened thereafter and how we managed to gather just 13.5 hours later near the impact point for a first for meteorite hunt. The second part of the talk will describe the details of the meteorite search\, the lessons we learned\, and how we managed to obtain the best-documented meteorite-strewn field ever. \nShort bios\nSirko Molau became a star gazer and amateur astronomer at the age of 15\, when he joined a youth club at public Archenhold Observatory in Berlin. One year later he conducted his first meteor observation – a topic which has fascinated him till then. In 1992 he used for the first time a video camera to record meteors. In 1997 he became head of Arbeitskreis Meteore e.V.\, a German society for observers of atmospheric phenomena\, and has remained bord member or head of organization till then. In 1999 he started the world-wide first video network to record meteors permanently\, which is still in operation today. Over the time the network has grown to more than 80 cameras recording the sky in about a dozen of countries. In 2018 he started his latest project and arranged the AllSky7 Fireball Network Europe\, a network of meanwhile a hundred all-sky cameras that are recording the skies 24/7. This network has already captured numerous fireballs and a few meteorite falls\, including Ribbeck. \nAndreas Möller is a member of the Arbeitskreis Meteore e.V. and is passionate about atmospheric phenomena\, especially auroras. Over the years\, he has built a well known website for aurora prediciton in Germany www.polarlicht-vorhersage.de as well as the Aurora Archive. In his free time\, he travels the world to photograph breathtaking landscapes and observe total solar eclipses. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/live/Dbh4mdT7CsI \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/599615146256577

SUMMARY:Space Elevators: the Green Road to Space - with Jason "Hap" Arnold
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nA space elevator connecting a sea-based platform on Earth with a space anchor in geosynchronous orbit is the inevitable solution for sustainable space lift and an equitable space economy. The realities of the “rocket equation” mean that cargo will always be prohibitively expensive to lift out of the gravity well\, limiting the scope of human activities in space. Rockets create pollution that contributes to climate change. The development of a space elevator provides limitless cargo lift using clean electricity. This allows critical space applications with large logistic footprints to be pursued. Projects such as space solar power\, planetary defense\, and communities on the Moon and Mars have lift requirements that are unachievable by any system other than the space elevator. A space elevator benefits all\, providing universal access to space\, not just for those nations that can afford rockets. The discovery and development of CVD Graphene and other materials with the strength to serve as a tether for the space elevator means that we can pursue this infrastructure now. The goals and ideals of the 18th SDG are best met by building a space elevator\, as a green road to space for all. \nA short bio\nDr. Jason “Hap” Arnold\, Ed.D. is the Mid-Atlantic Regional Director for the National Space Society (NSS.org)\, and the Director of Education and Outreach for the International Space\nElevator Consortium (ISEC.org). He serves as a member of the Board of Directors for both organizations. Dr. Arnold is a National Space Society “Space Ambassador.” Previously\, he was a Dean at the Defense Security Cooperation University. As a professor\, he taught at the National Defense University and Air Command and Staff College. SUMMARY:Multiplanetary\, and/or Interplanetary? - Joe Carroll Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nWe don’t know what gravity levels humans need for sustained good health. If Mars gravity is enough\, we can settle there and become multiplanetary. But whatever gravity we need\, we can also live in spinning facilities\, in earth orbit and then in interplanetary space. We can test our response to Mars gravity by trying to settle Mars\, or by living in a spinning station in LEO\, at far lower costs and risks. I will explore the implications of both options. \nA short bio\nJoe Carroll has worked in aerospace since 1981 and is now mostly retired. He developed the space tether systems used in SEDS\, PMG\, SEDS-2\, TiPS\, and TEPCE. His current focus is spinning space stations to evaluate human health in Moon and Mars gravity. \nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/KOf80sGqJzg \nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/632664865766576/
