SUMMARY:A Space 18th SDG for the Future\, Hybrid Workshop at U.N. Plaza 777\, NYC
DESCRIPTION:2025 is a crucial year. United Nations and its subsidiaries will perform two important re-examinations: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (the 17 SDGs\, issued in 2015)\, and the Space 2030 Agenda (issued in 2021). The Space 18th SDG Coalition already developed a substantial critical review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and advanced a fundamental amendment: to add an 18th SDG\, focused on Civilian-led Space Development. The Space 18th SDG Coalition also wants to bring its contribution to the discussion on the Space 2030 Agenda. All the Space Advocacy Organizations are warmly suggested to perform a critical review of such text. Space Renaissance International already initiated the work\, and will soon propose a general review and some key amendments. While the most relevant concern in the Agenda is sustainability\, space is only conceived as a tool to support sustainability on Earth’s surface. There’s no mention of outer space as an arena of possible expansion and development for human civilization. No mention of space settlement\, nor of its fundamental contribution to solving the social and economic issues of civilization. Possible amendments should remediate such an incredible lack: to add an Overarching Objective 5\, on Civilian Space Development\, Space Settlement\, and Industrialization\, as key factors of sustainable development\, having social\, economic\, and environmental concerns as primary criteria\, in reshaping the Space 2030 Agenda. The day includes two main modules: – Module #01 – Symposium for the Future\, starting 9 am\, New York time – Module #02 – Round table on 5 sessions: Space 2030 Agenda – a Critical Review\, Space for Peace\, Space for Sustainable Economic and Social Growth\, Space for Young Generations\, Space for Earth’s Environment and Sustainable Development – starting 2:30 pm\, New York time Many speakers and panelists\, including well known public figures as Bob Zubrin and Frank White\, diplomats and activists for human rights at U.N.\, like Claire Nelson\, will be questioned about the critical issues faced by civilization\, that require concrete actions before 2030. The meaningful concepts that will emerge during the workshop will be the subject of a final recommendation and will be key parts of the narration brought ahead by the Coalition’s representatives at U.N. COPUOS\, ECOSOC and\, even most important\, to the public audience worldwide. The workshop is also intended to be a useful conceptual input to the two meaningful U.N. instances\, occurring in September\, in the same location in NYC: the Summit of the Future (SOTF)\, and the U.N. 79th General Assembly. \n\n\nLinks\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel:  https://www.youtube.com/live/rFyAqmb4yhs\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1156074145490194/

SUMMARY:Art-Themed Virtual Reality for Mitigating Isolation on Long-Duration Space Missions
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe space industry presents new challenges with the involvement of diverse individuals\, particularly concerning extended isolation. Reports from astronauts and studies during analogue missions highlight isolation as a significant stressor\, intensified during long missions like those to Mars. Hence\, exploring restorative stimuli is vital to alleviate psychosocial stressors that could affect mission success. In September 2023\, the World Health Organization\, with the Jameel Arts & Health Lab\, emphasized the transformative role of arts in advancing well-being. This presentation discusses how art can enhance the health and well-being of humans in space\, proposing a theoretical framework to integrate artistic content into Virtual Reality (VR) environments. These environments could aid isolated individuals\, including astronauts on long missions and people on Earth. While VR’s potential in mitigating isolation has been explored\, the incorporation of artistic content and its benefits remain understudied in scholarly articles. Grounded in art therapy and psychological theories like Attention Restoration Theory (ART)\,  the paper addresses conceptual and practical bases and presents creative explorations for developing artistic VR experiments by drawing inspiration from the natural world and abstract art to be evaluated in space isolation and its analogous conditions. \n\n\nTjasa Savoric bio\nTjasa Savoric is a full-time PhD student at Deakin University (Australia) and Coventry University (United Kingdom). Her research interests lie at the intersection of art history\, digital humanities\, human-centred design\, XR (Extended Reality)\, and serious game design. She earned her Master’s degree in 2017 with distinction in Art History and Philosophy from the University of Maribor\, Slovenia. Tjasa combines her expertise in cultural heritage and art history with XR technology to explore new avenues for communicating art and its benefits in promoting wellbeing. In her PhD thesis\, she is investigating the potential of virtual reality in addressing psychological challenges associated with isolation\, with a particular focus on individuals in the ICU (Intensive Care Units) and analogue astronauts. \nKaja Antlej bio\nDr Kaja Antlej is Senior Lecturer in Industrial Design and Researcher at the CADET Virtual Reality Training and Simulation Research Lab\, School of Engineering\, Deakin University\, Australia. Her research interests lie in the intersection between human-centered design\, extended reality\, human space exploration\, futures thinking\, well-being\, digital heritage and virtual museums. SUMMARY:“Space For All: Sustainability & Peace\, on Earth and Beyond”
DESCRIPTION:Abstract:\nThe United Nations Committee for the Peaceful Use of Outer Space (COPOUOS) is holding 2 important sessions in springtime: the Legal SubCommittee on 15-25 April\, and the General Assembly 67th on 18-28 June. Such discussions\, preceding the U.N. General Assembly 79th\, which will take place in September\, focus on space resources. In the context of the incoming cislunar economy\, the legal\, scientific\, and technical aspects of lunar and asteroid resources mining\, extraction\, property\, industrial\, and intellectual properties\, are of primary importance. The current geopolitical conjuncture is characterized by two devastating wars at the doors of Europe\, and the dawn of astropolitics\, with several competing Moon initiatives. The broad support for the two main lunar initiatives – the ARTEMIS Accords and the ILRS – testify to the great interest of all the Earth’s Countries to be part of space development. \nSRI and NSS\, representing nearly 100 coalized co-promoters\, are participating to the COPUOS sessions in Vienna\, supporting a proposed 18th SDG\, focused on civilian-led space development\, to be added to the U.N. 2030 Agenda. With the purpose of supporting our delegation at COPUOS\, we have organized a virtual round table\, on the 12 of June 2024\, that will be live-streamed on the Space Renaissance YouTube channel. Everybody is invited to attend and to interact with the panelists via the YouTube chat. \nThe event includes a broad set of topics\, for 5 round-table panels: \n\nuse of space resources\, on Earth\, and in space\norbital debris\, mature waste management\, a circular blue economy on Earth\, on the Moon\, and in space\nspace law and private entities in space\nsustainable benefits for all peoples of planet Earth\nspace for sustainability and peace\, and sustainable space development\n\nWe call everybody to discuss with us: people from space-faring and not-yet-spacefaring countries\, what your expected benefits from space development\, and what your contribution to human evolution into a spacefaring civilization. \nLinks:\nFollow and interact live on the Space Renaissance Youtube channel: https://youtube.com/live/0jgKij9lWp8\nClick ‘going’ to the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/810580357786714/\n

SUMMARY:Effects of Microgravity on Human Health - Thais Russomanno
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe presence of gravity on Earth has had an integral effect on the development of life over billions of years and has shaped the anatomy and physiology of human beings. Exposure to microgravity has been shown to affect the whole body\, causing numerous changes\, such as a reduction in heart size and blood volume\, disturbances of the neurological system\, decreases in bone and muscle mass\, and impairment of the immune function. These physiological changes can lead to undesirable health consequences and to operational difficulties\, especially in emergency situations. This lecture is designed to raise awareness and understanding of humankind’s final frontier. It will give an overview of space missions of the past\, present and future\, and examine the physiological and psychological reactions of body and mind to the hostile environment of space. It will cover the countermeasures used during space missions\, plans for space tourism\, the return to the Moon and a first human trip to Mars. Consideration will be given to the health of astronauts during short- and long-term space flights\, and the application of telehealth for low Earth orbit and deep space missions will also be discussed. \n\n\nBiography\nProf. Thais Russomano\, MD MSc PhD has +30 yr of experience in Aerospace Medicine\, Space Physiology\, Telemedicine & Digital Health. SUMMARY:The Nutshell Kings: Roots of Resistance to Human Space Exploration and Settlement - Milan M. Ćirković
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nWe should face the fact that in promoting a vision of human space exploration and settlement we face not only natural obstacles and technological challenges\, but also active human resistance. Recent years have seen both a revival of space programs\, mostly propelled by private industry’s increasing interest\, and the (re)emergence of strong resistance to human space activities on several levels. This is partly a manifestation of a wider counter-Enlightenment Zeitgeist\, as detectable in other sectors of public life in the West\, and partly a reaction against the widespread engagement of the private sector. While it still does not dominate the discourse on space issues\, space scepticism/space resistance is surprisingly wide-ranging and decentralized phenomenon\, gathering together such heterogeneous strands of thought from anti-Enlightenment postmodernists and critical constructivists to rabid “deep ecology” activists to philosophical pessimists/nihilists to antiglobalist activists of all colours. There has been precious little in way of actively opposing this cultural trend so far\, however. The present talk will review major strands of thought within this “big tent” cultural movement and offer a taxonomy of their ideological roots. Some suggestions as to the important cultural\, educational and public-outreach work which needs to be done to balance the scales as given as well.\nKeywords: #spaceexploration\, #spacesettlement\, #geocentrism\, #antiliberalism\, #STEMeducation\, #publicoutreach \n\n\nMilan M. Ćirković\, a short bio\nMilan M. Ćirković is a senior Research Professor at the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade (Serbia) and a research associate of the Future of Humanity Institute at Oxford University\, Oxford (UK). He obtained his PhD at the Dept. of Physics\, State University of New York in Stony Brook in 2000 with the thesis in astrophysical cosmology. His primary research interests are in the fields of astrobiology (habitable zones\, habitability of galaxies\, SETI studies)\, philosophy of science (futures studies\, philosophy of cosmology)\, and risk analysis (global catastrophes\, observation selection effects\, epistemology of risk). He co-edited the widely-cited anthology on Global Catastrophic Risks (Oxford University Press\, 2008\, with Nick Bostrom)\, wrote four research monographs (the latest being Cosmic Microwave Background: Philosophical and Historical Aspects\, Cambridge University Press\, Cambridge\, 2024\, with S. Perović)\, as well as five popular science/general nonfiction books\, and authored about 200 research and professional papers. He is currently working on The Terrors of the Earth: Why We Ought to Leave this Planet – and Soon\, to be published in 2025 by Penguin Random House. \nMilan M. SUMMARY:Evolution and state of the art of launch systems - Alberto Cavallo
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nn the XXI century\, the world of orbital launchers has started a revolution\, a fundamental change of paradigm: the replacement of expendable rockets with reusable ones is well underway. This presentation summarizes the situation at the beginning of year 2024. \n\n\nBiography\n\nAlberto Cavallo is an Electrical Engineer\, graduated at the Politecnico di Torino in 1985. He began his activity with designing electric systems in Fiat Engineering\, the engineering and construction company of the FIAT Group\, moving soon to control and automation systems in the same company. He was involved in all business areas of the company\, which included revamping and new projects of car factories for the FIAT Group as well as large infrastructures\, power and cogeneration plants for external clients. Among the projects of that time were the new FIAT factories in Melfi and Pratola Serra\, the high speed railways Torino-Milano and Bologna-Firenze\, the district heating system of Torino Sud\, combined cycle power plants for several hundred megawatts in Italy and in Brazil. Since Fiat Engineering was transferred from the FIAT Group to a new EPC group and then merged with a large EPC company in Milan\, he has been involved in large oil and gas and petrochemical projects all over the world. Besides his professional activity\, he has always taken part in several cultural activities. He was a member of the Associations of Alumni of the Liceo Classico Vittorio Alfieri of Turin\, active in promoting humanistic culture as well as its connection to the technical and scientific area. He manages his own website www.eurinome.it (in Italian only) about philosophy\, science and politics/geopolitics. Due to this he got in contact with Adriano Autino and his TDF\, then becoming one of the founding members of Space Renaissance International. Besides several papers in his professional area he has written several articles for his own site\, for TDF and SRI\, coauthoring the book “Three Theses for the Space Renaissance” with Adriano Autino and Patrick Q. Collins. He is currently member of the Board of SRI. \n\nLinks\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/live/25MOAIeQCTk\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/912151083641437/

SUMMARY:The Urgency of Large-Scale Space Migration (LSSM) - Frank White
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nIt doesn’t take a rocket scientist to let us know that Spaceship Earth is in deep trouble. \nHumanity is operating as if we did not live on a finite planet with limited resources and a fragile ecosystem. Beyond our blindness to the interconnected nature of everything on Earth\, we are using our intelligence to create weapons with which to kill other crew members of our spaceship! It’s all because of our obsession with borders and boundaries that the experience of the Overview Effect reveals to be an illusion. \nWe must urgently provide as many people as possible with the transformational impact of the Overview Effect so that they will wake up from their dream about reality and see for themselves what is actually real. \nThen\, we must begin to create the infrastructure for Large-Scale Space Migration (LSSM)\, so that as many people and as much industry as possible can move off of the Earth and give the planet a chance to recover from our destructive behavior. \nFor this enormous “central project\,” we do need rocket scientists! \n\n\nBiography\nFrank White has authored or coauthored numerous books on topics ranging from space exploration to climate change to artificial intelligence. His best-known work\, “The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution\,” is considered by many to be a seminal work in the field of space exploration. A film called “Overview\,” based largely on his work\, has had more than 8 million plays on Vimeo. White considers himself to be a “space philosopher\,” and has long advocated developing a new philosophy of space exploration. His book on this topic\, “The Cosma Hypothesis: Implications of the Overview Effect\,” asks the fundamental question\, “What is the purpose of human space exploration? Why has the evolutionary process brought humanity to the brink of becoming a spacefaring species?” In the book\, he shares the idea of “the Human Space Program” as a “central project” that will engage all of us in the process of becoming “Citizens of the Universe.” \nLinks\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/live/0wZfwZBplyI\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/309950342024357/

SUMMARY:The contribution of humanities and social sciences to space exploration - Remo Rapetti
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nIt is a common opinion that space exploration is a matter that exclusively involves science and technology. Certainly the exploits of Gagarin or Apollo 11\, the missions of the Shuttle\, Mir or the ISS\, to mention only the milestones of these first 50 years\, were made possible by an amazing leap forward in mathematics\, physics\, medicine\, engineering\, etc. Even the most evident repercussions on our daily lives fall exactly within this scientific-technological area\, with an unexpected improvement in our existence\, which now has fundamental tools for medical research\, telecommunications\, mobility\, etc. But when the human being is involved\, things cannot be considered only in the “arid” light of science because human behavior always implicates the humanities and social disciplines\, i.e. philosophy\, literature\, art\, psychology\, sociology\, and even archeology. In my speech\, therefore\, I intend to underline the essential role that some of these disciplines have had in launching\, promoting and realizing the huge enterprises that have opened the door to the Moon\, Mars and deep space. \n\n \n\nBiography\nRemo Rapetti\, after a long career as director of Italian Cultural Institutes abroad\, continued his activity as a cultural promoter and a consultant. He has been the curator of many exhibitions that have been presented in Italy and abroad. For years he was a consultant for international relations of NABA (New Academy of Fine Arts in Milan) and of the Futurarium Association. Since its foundation\, he has been the coordinator of the Cultural Considerations Working Group of the Moon Village Association and has contributed to defining the cultural path of the group and to the organization of many webinars with the aim of deepening the various cultural themes related to space exploration. He has published articles\, translations and critical introductions to books and catalogues. Recently\, he has also contributed to the bimonthly Italian magazine Coelum Astronomia. \nLinks\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/live/oWv9CFEYUJs\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/204322058879226/

SUMMARY:How is Heaven Related to Space? Physical and Spiritual Ascent Narratives
DESCRIPTION:Abstract \nWhat is the relationship between life in heaven and life in outer space? Galileo famously quipped “The intention of the Holy Ghost is to teach us how one goes to heaven – not how heaven goes.” Jesus Ascension was not the same as the ascent of a rocket. Lucas Mix will talk about the history of ascent narratives\, tales of journeying into the heavens\, both scientific and spiritual – from Plato to Carl Sagan and The Expanse. \nAn essential bio \nThe Revd Dr Lucas Mix studies meanings of “life” at the intersection of biology\, philosophy\, and theology. He specialises in transdiciplinary communication and currently works at Durham University bringing together scientists and religious leaders. \n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nLinks\nFollow the Livestream on the Space Renaissance YouTube Channel: https://youtube.com/live/sGPqf6uIegc\nand click ‘going’ on the Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1705525996597533/

SUMMARY:Orbital Farm\, De-Risking Large Scale Life Support Systems for Space Settlements
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nJoin us on November 6th at 3:00 PM Eastern Time for a one-hour presentation on large scale life support systems. Explore the current state of space technologies and their potential applications\, both in space and here on Earth. Discover how these innovations are shaping the decades to come of human space exploration\, from lunar missions to beyond. Uncover the challenges and gaps we must address\, including issues of partial gravity\, radiation\, and global food production protocols. Our objective is to inform\, inspire\, and call for greater investment and research in large scale life support systems. We aim to foster a deep understanding of the potential these innovations hold for the future of space and our home planet. Don’t miss this opportunity to be a part of the conversation that could shape the future. Join us on November 6th and be a part of the movement to support Orbital Farm’s groundbreaking work. \nAn essential bio\nScot Bryson spent his life and career as problem solver. From picking stones and baling hay in farm fields\, frankensteining rotary engine cars in garages\, to becoming an entrepreneur at 22 and building a multi-million dollar advertising agency over a decade. After selling the business to a New York holding company and joining the M&A team\, he helped to acquire 19 companies in a 3-year period. Scot continued building a few more companies\, advising investors\, and mentoring students and entrepreneurs but soon realized that there are bigger challenges the world needs solving like Climate Change\, World Hunger\, and a healthier planet. He decided that he could make a bigger contribution to the world and started by assisting to commercialize and scale a novel biotechnology company. Through this experience\, he realized the need for a circular project development company. A company that can rapidly build large-scale novel technology projects that make an impact in the world. That has the ability to rapidly finance and deploy these projects all around the world because there are 821M+ people starving every day and the climate is changing faster than we can imagine. By selecting the right technologies we can build closed-loop farms to grow food anywhere on Earth today and even in space tomorrow. The best thing is that these technologies already exist around the planet. They just needed the right vision\, and ability to fund it. Scot started Orbital Farm in 2018\, and the company is now in the process of building closed-loop systems that can produce vaccines and medicines for billions\, hydrogen energy\, and food production all around the world from water\, CO2\, and electricity. Orbital Farm will build 200 circular megaprojects around the planet to support and feed billions of people here on Earth today\, and spend the next 20 years prototyping and developing the technology to feed people in space. \nLinks\nFollow the livestream on the Space Renaissance Youtube channel: https://youtube.com/live/mRu7mJ8wf9o\nClick ‘going’ to the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/767981972006394/

SUMMARY:SR Academy Space Habitats Committee Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Abstract – AGOS \nLiving in space in a zero- or low-gravity environment like the Moon or Mars causes danger to human health\, such as bone demineralization or muscle atrophy. In the long run space habitats need gravity simulation by rotating around their main axis. The AGOS (Artificial Gravity Orbital Station) project was designed as a rotating space station and a possible successor of the present ISS. The station is built of cylindrical modules and a structural framework. SpaceX Falcon launchers are proposed to transport the modules to Low Earth Orbit. The initial stage 1 of AGOS has a mass of 270 metric tons and a diameter of 102 meters. 24 crew members can live and work in a 0.9 g environment. In the far future\, Near Earth Asteroids (NEAs) can be mined to utilize their mineral resources. When the mining process is finished\, we can build a rotating habitat inside a hollow asteroid. As an example\, we have taken the asteroid 2008EV5 with a diameter of approx. 450 meters. A toroidal structure of 240 m diameter is rotating inside the asteroid´s hull. The stony hull provides shelter against radiation and meteorites. 2\,000 inhabitants can live on the inner surface of the torus. Nutrition is provided by vertical farming and aquaculture. In the coming centuries\, we can utilize about 10\,000 NEAs for mining and use some hundreds of them to carry human habitats. \nAn essential bio: Werner Grandl \nWeerner graduated at the Technical University of Vienna in 1984\, as architect and civil engineer. He published several papers on studies for space stations and space colonies\, utilization of lunar and asteroid resource. \nAbstract – The Development of Island Zero  \nIn the early 1970s\, Gerard O’Neil and others developed plans for a large habitat to be constructed in free space that could house 10\,000 people. The design – known as Island One – was deliberately restricted to the technology of the time\, so that no-one could suggest that it was fantasy due to requiring materials that had not been invented. However\, during the next 40 years there had been all kinds of improvements in materials science\, engineering\, and other areas that could make this program more efficient\, so I ran a project at the British Interplanetary Society to re-examine and update the original studies. Construction would not begin with Island One; we’d need to establish a much smaller structure first\, to house the personnel that will assemble the facilities for construction. This would demonstrate many of the features of a full settlement but on a much smaller scale\, both in size and cost\, as a way of showing the viability of some of the ideas behind space habitation. We designated the initial unit as “Island Zero”. \nAn essential bio: Jerry Stone \nI am a Freelance Space Presenter; I run Spaceflight UK and give presentations on a range of topics on astronomy and space exploration all over the UK and abroad. I am a fellow of the British Interplanetary Society and the Royal Astronomical Society.  I am also a member of the Board of the Space Renaissance International\, and the chair of the Space Habitats Committee. I ran a project at the British Interplanetary Society to re-examine and update the original space habitat studies. This became the SPACE Project – Study Project Advancing Colony Engineering\, which also resulted in a new design for what we called “Island Zero”\, as described above. \nLinks\nFollow the livestream on the Space Renaissance Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/V_YKlk9UFIc \nClick ‘going’ to the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/859920138879661/

SUMMARY:Spartan Space – a European habitat for the Moon – and how those can help to address challenges on planet Earth
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nThe ARTEMIS programme will open a new era of space exploration and a beginning of a sustainable presence and exploration of the lunar surface. The Moon is not ‘a’ steppingstone towards Mars\, it is ‘the’ steppingstone. The target of these missions is the lunar South Pole due to strategic resources that will be needed to set up a sustainable presence on the Moon’s surface and to prepare towards destinations such as planet Mars. But one must understand that the region of interest has approximately the size of the city of Paris\, so it will be crowed up there.\nDr. Peter Weiss will present ARTEMIS not only from a European perspective but also from the point of view of one of the start-ups in Europe’s space sector that are targeting the Moon. What could be a European contribution to ARTEMIS\, complementary to the US ARTEMIS program ?\nSPARTAN SPACE from Marseille\, France works with its industrial and agency partners in Europe on the development of a secondary habitat “EUROHAB” which can be brought to the lunar surface by European capacities. It can serve as base camp for extended extravehicular activities of ARTEMIS’ crews and might become a rallying point between different robotic and human missions.\nDr. Weiss will present this concept and illustrate its development since 2021 by SPARTAN SPACE. He will also show the industrial challenge and its business model which is based on the return of technologies to terrestrial applications: Technologies that can serve to sustain astronauts on the lunar surface can help to reduce some of the challenges on planet Earth: Energy Management\, Water Recycling and CO2 reduction are some key functionalities which are integrated in EUROHAB. Similar technologies can also be implemented in normal households in the future to reduce the impact on the planet. The development of technology for human space exploration can also come to the help of our terrestrial challenges. \nA short bio\nDr. Peter WEISS is Founder and CEO of SPARTAN SPACE Marseille\, France. Peter has more than 20 years of experience in the management of industrial and research projects in the maritime and space sector. He is the Founder and CEO of SPARTAN-SPACE\, a start-up company specializing on the development of underwater and space habitats and platforms. SPARTAN SPACE is involved in the development of the European modules for the GATEWAY and develops\, under CNES contract\, a concept of a secondary habitat for the lunar surface (EUROHAB). SPARTAN SPACE is part of the selection of start-ups in the TECHNTHEMOON initiative by CNES. The start-up company is also involved in several underwater habitat developments. During his career he tries to combine his passion for space and the oceans. Peter worked at the DLR in Oberpfaffenhofen\, Germany\, on a motor drive of a lightweight robot arm\, at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston\, USA\, on the development of artificial muscles for self-transforming robotic planetary explorers\, at Cybernetix in Marseille\, France\, as Project Manager for European Commission on underwater robotics and AUV\, at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University on a robotic microgravity sampling device for the PHOBOS-GRUNT mission and for over ten years as Director of the Space Department and Company Board member of COMEX in Marseille\, France in underwater space simulations and astronaut training. He was Co-Founder and President until 2016 of POWERSEA\, a start-up company for the development of connectors for marine renewables. Peter was awarded in the APOPHIS MISSION DESIGN COMPETITION\, organized by NASA\, ESA and the PLANETARY SOCIETY. He received the French Medal of Internal Security for the intervention and psychological support of the families of the Germanwings airplane crash in 2015 (as member of the French Red Cross)\, the OCEANS X SPACE Business Applications Competition prize by European Space Agency in 2018 and a special mention by the Concours Jacques Rougerie International Architecture and Arts prizes in 2020 for the EUROHAB concept. \nLinks\nFollow the livestream on the Space Renaissance Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/live/bhgitVP2DuY\nClick ‘going’ to the Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1665459473936156

SUMMARY:Recognizing and Protecting the History of Humans in Space - Michelle Hanlon
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nHeritage is an evolving resource that supports identity\, memory and sense of place and has a crucial role in achieving sustainable development. Humanity has a common responsibility to the past – to protect it so that we may move forward to the future in unity.\nUnfortunately\, historic sites\, our heritage\, in outer space – and particularly on the Moon – are distressingly vulnerable to damage\, whether intentional or inadvertent. And yet\, they enjoy no legal protection or even recognition. The treaty regime guiding outer space activities is silent with respect to the management\, conservation and preservation of our human and cultural heritage in outer space. Indeed\, not only do the treaties provide little clarity\, their provisions raise more questions than they address. As a practical matter\, this means there is nothing to stop anyone or any rover from destroying the still preserved bootprints left by Neil and Buzz at Tranquility Base\, or any robotic lunar landing sites. It is an unfortunate state of affairs in particular because there is little doubt humanity is headed back to the Moon.\nBut we have an unprecedented opportunity. This is the first time in human history that we can preserve our human heritage before destruction or abuse. and embrace the fact that preservation is not antithetical to progress. It is a sign of progress.\nFor All Moonkind has started laying the groundwork for the development of an international system that preserves our heritage in space. This presentation will describe the steps taken nationally and internationally to protect cultural heritage in outer space and outline continuing efforts to assure this moment is not lost. \nAn essential bio\nMichelle L.D.
