Astrosertania: the rise of interplanetary culture in Brazilian Semiarid

Abstract

Astrosertania explores the emergence of an interplanetary culture inspired by Brazil’s Semiarid region, connecting space exploration, sustainability, technology, and Sertanejo cultural identity. Based on experiences developed at Habitat Marte, the presentation examines how landscapes, traditional knowledge, artistic expressions, resilience, and adaptation to scarcity can inspire future extraterrestrial settlements. Astrosertania proposes a cultural framework in which humanity’s expansion beyond Earth is not only technological but also social, symbolic, and artistic. By connecting the Sertão with the cosmos, the concept demonstrates how local cultures can contribute to imagining diverse, sustainable, and culturally meaningful futures for human civilization beyond our planet.

A short bio

Professor Julio Rezende coordinates the space analog station Habitat Marte, participated in more than 200 space missions, is an administrator and psychologist, professor of sustainability in the Department of Industrial Engineering at UFRN, with a doctorate in sustainability and a post-doctorate in clean technologies from the University of Central Florida – UCF.
