Civilization-Building Intelligence: Preparing Humans for Life Beyond Earth

Abstract
What does it mean to live through a civilizational shift? It means the old frameworks no longer hold. The perspectives that served us on one planet fail in the in-between. The question is no longer what we can build, but what we must become. Machines can originate—GenAI proves this daily. But origination in isolation is only half the story. The full power emerges when humans and machines create together. Human intuition plus machine exploration. Human meaning-making plus machine pattern-finding. This is co-creation. To choose this path, we must build the creative, innovative part of the human being. Creativity must be exercised and encouraged—not outsourced to machines, but brought into partnership with them. I am not a doctor. I do not have a traditional career in robotics. But I grew up with robots—my father bought me one every year. That lived relationship taught me something no degree can: how to be with machines, not just use them. The future needs many ways of knowing.
From this way of knowing, new human capacities emerge:

Gerard O’Neill asked in 1969, “Is a planetary surface really the best place for an expanding technological civilization?” His answer points to the in-between. My work asks the next question: Will we arrive there as co-creators—having exercised our humanity, partnered with our machines, and built something neither could build alone? But there is something deeper. Something that comes before all of this. Before we know it, we feel. This feeling comes before knowledge—a sensing of what is coming, what matters, and what calls to us. As technology accelerates and we must adapt faster, this feeling becomes our compass. Machines cannot feel. They have not caught up to this dimension, and perhaps they never will. But they can clarify. They can take what we sense but cannot yet name and show us its shape. Then we together grow and build further. Human feeling + machine clarity = co-creation. This is the partnership the future asks of us. Not humans serving machines. Not machines replacing humans. But feeling clarified, and clarity felt—together. The question is not whether we will live with intelligent machines on the Moon. We will. The question is what kind of humans we will be when we get there—whether we will have remembered that our deepest power lies not in what we know, but in what we feel.

Veronica Chiaravalli is the founder, CEO, and chief robotics officer (CRO) of Emerging Technologies Sweden / MultiplanetaryX, where she works at the intersection of pioneering innovation, emerging technologies, human-robot interaction (HRI), human factors, and human and socio-technical systems for future off-world civilizations. Her work explores how humans, AI, intelligent systems, and robots can collaborate effectively in isolated, extreme, and emerging environments. A certified virtual analog astronaut, she has completed Mars and lunar analog missions with Habitat Marte. Chiaravalli serves as vice president and board director of The Moon Society and is a member, volunteer, and partner of Space Renaissance International (SRI). In 2026, she presented at the SRI4 World Congress and authored three academic papers developed from her congress abstracts. Her current research and framework development focuses on human–AI–robot collaboration, Human-Integrated Systems Architecture (HISA), off-world socio-technical systems, Pioneering Innovation, and Civilization-Building Intelligence (CBI)—the capacities required not merely to survive beyond Earth, but to build communities capable of learning, adapting, achieving Quality of Life, thriving, and evolving across generations.
