Cultural Legacies on the Lunar Surface

7 October @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm UTC

Abstract

Cheryl was an early adopter of the “To The Moon” initiative by Copernic Space and Lifeship’s inclusive cultural and scientific assets, both libraries of work to be stored in specially radiation insulated time capsules on upcoming lunar lander missions. Both initiatives invited her to contribute creative content to their time capsules. This particular lunar mission will be launched on a SpaceX Falcon9 rocket out of Cape Canaveral, mounted on the Firefly Blue Ghost One Lander, and scheduled to land on the lunar surface inside Mare Crisum, in the center of an ancient volcano Mons Latreille. The mission will be actively conducting experiments for about two weeks after landing on the lunar surface before freezing over, preserved for perpetuity on the moon for later generations far in the future to discover. Details about this launch are available at https://nextspaceflight.com/launches/details/6794. Copernic Space is hosting payload space for Space Art and other innovative space assets featured in its “Spaceibles” NFT catalog, and Lifeship offers a variety of ways to participate in their space-based time capsule initiative, including creative content, but also contributing other digitized items of personal meaning, along with indigenous histories and animal plant and even human DNA. Implications for a unique space commerce structure and a viable inclusive space economy exist in this realm of cultural sharing and exchange. If said time capsule is discovered more or less intact and deciphered thousands perhaps even millions of years from now, will we be the “Rosetta Stone” for our era in this form? Cultural and ethical questions arise with regard to depositing records of humankind and earth records on the lunar surface. How should we in the space community respond to initiatives like this?
