“We have a mission to Jupiter!” – Those were the words of Andrea Accomazzo, flight director of the latest ESA mission after successful launch of the JUICE spacecraft on April 14th. The pre-last Ariane 5 rose and shot precisely through the clouds in Kourou and deployed JUICE in an orbit around the sun where it will be accelerated until 2029, reaching Jupiter in 2031. Then the scientific mission will begin, orbiting Jupiter and visiting its three icy moons Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. 35 Flybys are planned, 11 experiments will be performed, 1.4 Gigabyte of data expected – each day at the flybys. Then follows the highlight of the JUICE mission, when the craft will be entering orbit around Ganymede in 2034 – the first space probe to circle another planet’s satellite. One of the main goals of this outstanding mission will be confirming oceans under the surface of the big icy moons of Jupiter. What an exciting scientific journey!
