Space Elevators: the Green Road to Space – with Jason “Hap” Arnold

3 February @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm UTC

Abstract

A space elevator connecting a sea-based platform on Earth with a space anchor in geosynchronous orbit is the inevitable solution for sustainable space lift and an equitable space economy. The realities of the “rocket equation” mean that cargo will always be prohibitively expensive to lift out of the gravity well, limiting the scope of human activities in space. Rockets create pollution that contributes to climate change. The development of a space elevator provides limitless cargo lift using clean electricity. This allows critical space applications with large logistic footprints to be pursued. Projects such as space solar power, planetary defense, and communities on the Moon and Mars have lift requirements that are unachievable by any system other than the space elevator. A space elevator benefits all, providing universal access to space, not just for those nations that can afford rockets. The discovery and development of CVD Graphene and other materials with the strength to serve as a tether for the space elevator means that we can pursue this infrastructure now. The goals and ideals of the 18th SDG are best met by building a space elevator, as a green road to space for all.
