ABSTRACT
The modern civilization renaissance represents a pervasive global phenomenon, which is being rapidly enabled through the exponential growth of space-based applications and many innovative types of public/private partnership. Such a process can best be described as providing a capable dual track approach, enabling the furtherance of low earth orbit ICT assets, along with the focus on internationalized space exploration and settlement. Several notable developments, such as the successful experimentation of fully reusable rockets (by the US company Space X), and the development of disruptive technologies such as additive 3d manufacturing for both space based and terrestrial usage, are boosting the global Space Renaissance. A virtuous and progressive social process, fosters the growth of the New Space industry, while an open season of innovation, is rapidly reforming the traditional aerospace dimensions.
This collaborative space based perspective establishes a comprehensive potential, to “leapfrog” or short path the development process at large, through the utilization of advanced data-based systems and planning techniques, and the pooling of inter-agency and global technological resources. Applications and platforms of such types may be utilized in many areas, for agriculture, education, healthcare, and for other uses such as equitable security structures both local and national, urban development and infrastructure, transportation, governance, civil society engagement and representation and so on. The Space Renaissance worldview proposes that collaborative space development provides an inspirational objective through the formulation of an integrated and inclusive line of approach.
Within this paradigm the leading partnership of Nigeria and the All Africa community represents a key element, which will greatly influence the formative expectation for the placement of International settlement in geo-lunar space and on the Moon’s surface over the next 50 years. Activities in the geo-lunar space will not be limited to exploration and scientific research, but will focus upon an inclusive and incremental process of space based industrialization leading to permanent manned settlement, including features such as space tourism and private and civilian passenger facilities, cis-lunar cargo transportation systems and the development of asteroid and lunar mining, together with related services, such as fueling stations and orbital workshops for the in-situ maintenance of transportation vehicles and orbital satellites. The removal and reuse of space debris will provide active priorities as well. Other leading indicators are also established including the development of fast nuclear propulsion for the trips to Mars and space based solar power as an energy source for a future world.
The motivated contribution and the full participation of the emerging countries is essential to the furtherance of the global space development paradigm at large, and to the rapid fulfillment of an International space industrialization and settlement program. The benefits of an inclusive and holistic outlook cannot be underestimated, as such an applications basis will immediately justify many levels of growth and development, within the distributed usage of space based informational applications, the advancement of terrestrial technologies, and the further placement of orbital and deep space access and infrastructure.
The national discussion for space represents a dynamic medium and describes a considerable sphere of influence with far reaching potentials and effects. The SRI-Nigeria program will directly address these various issues, engaging for a leading insight, optimal policy making and extensive public education. SRI-Nigeria 2017 event will enable a comprehensive overview, celebrating the 50-year anniversary of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty and looking towards the significant achievements of the 50 years that lie ahead. The UNISPACE+50 program in 2018 will comprise the Fourth International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, in this regard SRI-Nigeria 2017 program will also provide an open and available segue for the extensive Nigeria and All Africa contributions within the notable UN auspice.
From a Space industry point of view Nigeria is the most significant African country: Nigeria successfully runs the Nigeriasat and the NigComSat programmes, and provides well established and compatible space regulations, with significant objectives, such as space debris mitigation. In addition, Nigeria constitutes a potentially huge market for satellite downstream applications, being the most populated country in Africa and one of the most populated countries of the world. All these factors make Nigeria an excellent ground for enhancing the progressive vision of Space Renaissance and for the transfer of technology to and from the most enterprising and advanced space companies.
The SRI Nigeria SPACE 2017 APOLLO ASTRONAUTS SERIES event will additionally extend a unique opportunity for companies to meet together, through a dedicated business-to-business meeting day.
The full event program will be available presently, with open invitation to all interested parties.
